EXETER CITY v. BRIGHTON
Opening League Match at St James's Park
Wednesday August 30th.
EXETER CITY 1 BRIGHTON O.
Last season: City O Brighton 3.
Doran, playing at centre-forward, performed the "hat-trick" for Brighton and Hove Albion at St James's Park last season, the City being beaten by three clear goals. The big Irishman is now with Manchester City, and he is already being missed by his old club.
The wet weather today, coupled with the counter-attraction of the Haldon Races, militated against a big attendance at this, the opening Football League match of the season at Exeter. Rain fell relentlessly, and while the stand and the sheltered portion of the enclosure filled up well there was a very sparse attendance outside.
The teams came out at 3.25 o'clock and lined up in the following order:-
EXETER CITY
Fryer
Pollard Ackroyd
Crompton Southway Clarke
Newman Vowles Devlin Mathieson Dockray
Referee:- Mr E.E.Small, of Bristol.
BRIGHTON
Hayes
Jenkins, Feebery
Neil, Coomber, Little
Groves A.Jones Saunders Moore I.Jones
Feebery, well remembered at Exeter, won the toss, and chose to defend the "Duke bank." The City forwards quickly got into their stride, and a header from Devlin finished up in the side netting. Ackroyd intercepted a Brighton attack, and the return from Little went over the bar.
After 26 minutes Mathieson scored what proved to be the only goal of the game. The ground was almost under water by the time the second half commenced but the match was nevertheless brimful of incident.

BATH CITY v. EXETER CITY RESERVES
Return Southern League match:
Thursday, August 31st.
BATH CITY 4 EXETER CITY RESERVES 2.
A large crowd watched Bath City played the return match with Exeter City Reserves at Twerton Park. The Bathonians made several changes from the side which went down at Exeter on Saturday.
Bath City:
Adams; Williams, Smith;
Nuth, Dallimore, March;
Thorne, Harrison, Dore, Williams, Woodward.
Referee: Mr A.Richards, of Bristol.
City Reserves:
Dart;
Bell, Flynn;
Richards, Mitton, Crockford;
Matthews, Camble, Parsons, Newberry, Shelton.
Bright weather prevailed. Exeter sprang a surprise on the home team in practically the first minute of the game, Newberry smartly turning to account a great centre from Matthews, scoring with a shot which completely baffled Adams.
After this early reverse Bath attacked continuously. Williams came up quickly on the left, and beating Crockford, had plenty of time to centre, which he did admirably, but the home forwards in front of goal could not control the ball, and Flynn cleared.
Another chance was wasted after Dallimore had worked out an excellent opening, but just after this Bath City equalised. The ball was planted right in the goalmouth by Woodward, and it was edged through off the goal-post by Williams. Then a centre from Matthews rebounded off the crossbar and was cleared by Smith.
Half-time 1-1.
Crockford took advantage of slack marking to score for Exeter. After Matthews had shot over the bar Bath came strongly into the game and Dore equalised. From Woodward's pass Dore gave them the lead, and Williams scored the fourth goal.
