EXETER CITY v ABERDARE ATHLETIC

Saturday September 2nd.

EXETER CITY 1-0 ABERDARE ATHLETIC

Last season: City 0 Aberdare 1.

The weather was fine, following the downpour on Wednesday, and the ground had dried out. Everything favoured a fast, keen, and fairly even game, and a big crowd was anticipated for this, the opening Saturday Football League match of the season on the City playing pitch.

EXETER CITY

Fryer
Pollard Ackroyd
Crompton Southway Clarke
Newman Vowles Devlin Mathieson Dockray

ABERDARE ATHLETIC
Duckworth
Price Brooke
Archibald Gillespie Anderson
Tompkinson Rogers Martin Mayson Danskin

Aberdare won the toss, and Exeter started facing the City end and a strong sun. Straight away the crowd, numbering 7,000, were given something to cheer, for Devlin sent Newman goal-wards with a good pass, but the winger's centre went behind the line.

Nothing was scored in the first half, but Aberdare had a very lucky escape five minutes before it ended. Crompton swung the ball across the goalmouth and it was collected by Dockray, whose pass gave Devlin an excellent chance of shooting. The centre forward, however, was slow to take advantage and tapped the ball wide.

When play was resumed an accident befell one of the linesmen, who received the full force of a drive by Crompton in his face. He carried on for about ten minutes, but was eventually replaced by Mr Frith, of Exeter.

Immediately afterwards Devlin scored for Exeter, by lobbing the ball over Duckworth's head and into the rigging. Both sides now attacked in turn, Duckworth saving from Mathieson and Vowles, and Fryer from Rogers and Anderson.

Taunton v City Reserves

Friendly
The City Reserves visited Taunton, where they engaged in a friendly against Newton's. Rigby managed to score a goal for both sides, the match resulting in a draw, one goal each.
