BRENTFORD V. EXETER CITY
Saturday, October 14th.
At Griffin Park.
BRENTFORD 0 EXETER CITY 1.
Last season: Brentford 5 City 2.
Leaving Exeter at a quarter past ten this morning en route to Brentford, the City team journeyed across the south country with a cloudless sky above them, and found the Metropolis basking in brilliant sunshine. The Brentford ground was reached at 2 p.m, and the turf was found to be in excellent condition. The success of the "Bees" last week had aroused great enthusiasm, and the supporters of the club turned up in force with confident expect ation of seeing their favourites bring off a double at Exeter's expense. The Grecians made changes in each department in front of goal, Devlin, Mitton, Rigby, and Pollard returning to the side. Brentford were unchanged, and the teams turned out in the following order :
BRENTFORD
Young
Alton Rosier
Inglis Hunter Kerr
Capper Clays on Morris Johnstone Stott
Referee:- Mr E.E. Small, of Bristol.
Shelton Mathies on Devlin Kirk Matthews
Crompton Mitton Rigby
Ackroyd Pollard
Fryer
EXETER CITY
Brentford won the toss, and Exeter had to face the sun in the opening half. Morris robbed Mathieson at the outset, but Pollard kept the Bees at bay. Morris then snapped up a wide pass from Johnstone and rounded Ackroyd to win himself a clear opening but his shot passed well outside the upright.
Offside spoiled the next Brentford thrust, and the exchanges remained in midfield. Brentford tried to make headway along the left wing, but found Pollard in resistant mood. Pollard in fact won a generous round of applause for cleverly intercepting the intended pass from Hunter to Johnstone, and in another attempt by the home forwards to get through Morris was fouled by Mitton, who was cautioned by the referee.
DEFENCES ON TOP
The Exeter backs were working well together, and Mitton was proving too clever for Morris. In fact the defences of both sides were well on top of their opposing forward lines, and by the end of twenty minutes neither goalkeeper had touched the ball.
Brentford came away in a line, and Pollard robbed Stott just when things were looking critical. The first corner of the match fell to Brentford, but this was cleared, and away went Exeter to the other end. A nice pass from Shelton gave Devlin possession, and his shot from 20 yards was headed out from almost under the crossbar by Rosier. Kirk then missed narrowly with a hard cross shot. Exeter had increased the pace of their game during the ten minutes remaining of the first half, and Crompton, Mitton, Kirk, and Matthews all had commendable scoring attempts frustrated by Young and his backs. The score-sheet was blank at the interval. Fryer saved from Morris when the game re-started, and Mitton sent Shelton away with a fine long touch-line pass. The ball was returned to the middle where Devlin and Mathieson were waiting, but Rosier got there first, and headed clear. Exeter City were playing with far more confidence and skill than they have done all the season, and Kirk, with a long shot, and Devlin, with a header, were unlucky not to score.
Keeping up the pressure Exeter literally played the Bees to a stand still for a time, and eventually the persistence of the forwards brought the desired reward. Matthews cut in at a fast pace from the right wing, and his rising shot, from an acute angle, was lifted into the top of the net by the goalkeeper, thus giving the City a lead they thoroughly deserved.
CITY RESERVES v GUILDFORD
Guildford United were today's visitors to St James's Park, Exeter, in search of Southern League points. The City included Purrington, of Heavitree United, at right half in the place of Carter, this being the only alteration from the advertised eleven.
Teams :
RESERVES:
Dart; Flynn, Bell;Purrington, Southway, Litten; Camble, Vowles, Parsons, Crockford, Dockray.
GUILDFORD:-
Cooper; Hodson, Stevens; Gowan, Waugh, Porter; Herbert, Smith, Adlam, Ketchell, Westle.
Referee:- Mr T.T.Dunstan.
John Dockray, who captained the Grecians, beat Porter in the matter of the toss, and elected to defend the St James's Road end of the ground. Adlam kicked off against glaring sunshine. The early play favoured the City, and Vowles was unfortunate with two good scoring attempts. Dockray forced his way along the touch line and cut in past Gowan, but his effort was wasted by Crockford, who from the centre shot weakly and straight at the goalkeeper. The game then took a surprising turn, for Adlam scored twice for Guildford, the second goal being grand header, well awayfrom the reach of Dart.
In the second half Crockford went to left-half, Litten to outside-right, and Camble to inside-left. The changes did not have the desired effect, and the only goal scored in this half was one by Porter for Guildford, about a minute from time.
The final score was:
City Reserves 0 Guildford United 3.
EXETER CITY RESERVES
Beaten at Brighton 2-0
Wednesday, October 18th.
BRIGHTON RESERVES 2 CITY RESERVES 0.
Half a gale of wind at Goldstone Road militated against good football in the Southern League match there between the reserves of Brighton and Exeter City.
The spectators, however, had their fill of entertainment and excitement, both teams being very much in earnest and putting up a ding-dong battle for the points.
The Grecians were in very lively mood and attacked hotly at times. In one Brighton raid Fryer was injured, but happily able to resume later. During his brief absence Flynn kept goal. Twenty minutes before the finish Broadhead headed a fine goal, and this put a lot of extra sparkle into the play. Brighton were very forceful but Exeter defended well.
In the closing minutes of the game, with Brighton pressing eagerly, a penalty was given against Bell for handling. Little scored from the spot-kick.
Exeter Reserves:- Fryer; Flynn, Bell; Purrington, Southway, Vowles; Matthews, Camble, Devlin, Crockford, and Dockray.
