Match 46
30th April 1921
Reading (h)

Reserve Friendly
Taw Shipyard (a)

ECFC 0-1 Reading
Attendance: 6,000.

There were 6000 spectators on the ground when Reading came out, at 3:23 o'clock, and Exeter quickly followed.
Pym won the toss, and elected to face the strong sunshine in the first period, with the breeze helping Exeter slightly.

Exeter City:-
Pym. Pollard. Feebery. Rigby. Carrick. Green. Brayshaw. Makin. Vowles. Shields. Dockray.

Referee:-Mr C.Austin, of Kidderminster.
Linesman:-Messrs. F.P. Farrow and C.F. Moon

Reading:-
Crawford. Smith. Horler. Wilde. Getgood. Harbidge. Bartholomew. Bailey. Weston. Cameron. Carr.

Midway through the first half a series of miskicks by the Exeter rearguard enabled the visitors to make ground, and from a centre by Carr, nicely placed across the front of Pym's charge, Bailey moved forward and rammed into the net for the opening goal.
Exeter's best chance was presented to them 12 minutes after the start of the second half when they were awarded a penalty kick through Horler fouling Shields. Feebery took the shot, and with a fierce shot struck the outside of the post, the ball going behind.

A heavy storm of rain then swept the ground, driving the crowd to shelter, wherever cover could be found.
Players slipped and slithered on the wet turf, and the gloomy scene no doubt corresponded to the feelings of the City supporters, for after the bright performance of last week-end by the Grecians, another victory today appeared almost a certainty. The failure of Feebery to score from the penalty spot disheartened the team to a greater extent than should of been the case, and indeed, some of the players were much too ready to accept the situation.
10 minutes before the finish Wilde went off, injured, and five minutes later he returned just as Getgood, whose leg was damaged in a tackle with Shields, was being carried off.
Carrick was so slow to move in the closing stages that some of the crowd assailed him with shouts of "Get on with it."

Full Time:- City 0-1 Reading.

Reserve Game.
Taw Shipyard 0-3 City Reserves.
The visit of Exeter City Reserves to Barnstaple this afternoon to play their return match with the Taw Shipyard was anticipated with a considerable amount of interest, and many came in from the surrounding district to see the match. Glorious sunny weather, more suited to cricket than football prevailed.

Referee:- Me E. Williams, of Barnstaple.

Reserves:-

A large crowd lined the ropes around the field when Staddon set the ball in motion.

In the second period McIntyre scored twice and Hilton once for the City Reserves.
