A Crushing Reverse: Rovers go "Nap"

Exeter City sustained a cracking reverse at Bristol on Monday evening, before 7000 spectators.
They were beaten by five goals to nil, and except for first 10 minutes never looked like making s match of it with Rovers.

Bristol Rovers:-
Whatley. Hall. Panes. Boxley. Sims. Steele. Walter. Morgan. Leigh. Crompton. Palmer.

Referee: Mr A.E. Caseley, of Wolverhampton.

Exeter City:-
Pym. Pollard. Feebery. Rigby. Carrick. Green. Brayshaw. Makin. Vowles. Shields. Dockray.

The Rovers went into the attack immediately on the start, and in 5 minutes the Exeter backs fumbled badly. Leigh was let through, and though  Pym advanced, which was all he could do, he was beaten.
The City made an effort to equalise from a centre by Dockray, but the ball was cleared at an opportune moment.
After 20 minutes Palmer centred and Leigh scored number two for the Rovers, and four minutes later Leigh completed his hatrick from an ideal centre by Walker.

Half-time Rovers 3-0 City.

At the end of seventeen minutes' play in the second half, Leigh got his fourth goal with a hard shot from close quarters. The game was monopolised by Bristol Rovers, from whom Crompton obtained goal number five with a shot sent in from quite thirty yards.
Had it been for the many brilliant clearances made by Pym the defeat would have been the worst in City's history.

Full-Time:- Bristol Rovers 5-0 Exeter City

Reserve Match
Torquay Town v Exeter City
Wednesday May 4th 1921.

Torquay Town, with the assistance of Townsend and Stuckey, of Babbacombe, entertained Exeter City's full Third Division team on the Recreation Ground.

Torquay Town:- Gartrell. Bovey. Drew. Williams. Counter. Steer. Sanders. Townsend. Stuckey. Evans. Jackman.

Exeter City:-
Pym. Pollard. Feebery. Rigby. Carrick. Green. Appleton. Makin. Vowles. Brayshaw. Dockray.

Torquay had by far the better of the game, and Stuckey opened the scoring midway through the second half. Makin equalised with almost the last kick of the game.

Full Time:-Torquay Town 1-1 Exeter City.

Dockray, who was the City's best forward, was too fast and had too many tricks for either Williams or Bovey to cope with, and if Exeter had played more to their left wing they would have won.
On the other wing Appleton was practically a passenger thanks to an injury to his ankle early in the game.

Western League.
Cardiff Reserves 2-1 City Reserves
Friday May 6th.
Ninian Park, Cardiff.

The opening stages were marked by a contribution of clever combination by the Exeter right wing, but it resulted in nothing more tangible than a throw-in from touch, from which Cardiff gained relief.
The next incident of note came from the Cardiff right wing, a dangerous centre being sent over by Beare after he had used his speed to get past Betteridge. From this centre Davies headed the ball over the bar.
Exeter then attacked, and Shields fired in an unexpected shot, the ball grazing the upright NDA going behind. The game proceeded in pendulum fashion, with Exeter having as much play as the "Bluebirds." Sayles had to kick to touch from McIntyre, and at the other end Charles did well to save a withering first-timer from Sarvis. The goalkeeper was later injured in saving at full length from Davies, but resumed after treatment. Cardiff had the better of subsequent exchanges, and the only cause of failure on their part to register a goal was the brilliant custodianship of Charles. At the other end Kneeshaw saved from McIntyre.

Second Half
Straight from the re-start Cardiff attacked on the right-wing, and perfect centre was delivered by Beare, only for Sarvis to mis-kick with the goal at his mercy.
After the Cardiff attack had been repulsed by Betteridge, Exeter made progress on the left, from which Congdon got clear and passed to Shields, who beat Kneeshaw with a flashing oblique angled drive.
15 minutes later Cardiff equalised from the penalty spot, Davies putting the ball past Charles with a slow shot, and Beare scored the winning goal two minutes from the end.

Full time:-
Cardiff Reserves 2-1 City Reserves.
