Swansea v City
Saturday, October 21st.
At the Vetch Field.
SWANSEA TOWN 5-1 EXETER CITY
Last season: Swansea 2 City 1.
Journeying this morning from Cardiff, the Exeter players, in the charge of Mr Chamberlain, reached the big West Wales centre in excellent time for the match. The weather was bright and cold with a stiff breeze blowing from end to end of the ground at the Vetch Field.
Swansea is filled with great fervour just now. Plenty of wins and goals to the local team's credit has stirred the locals up with tremendous enthusiasm. Swansea Town, so far unbeaten at home, confidently expected to improve their League position at Exeter's expense today. The Grecians had hopes of a different sort, naturally enough. Last Saturday's success at Brentford has inspired confidence, previously lacking, to the team, and they were "all out" to try and break the Swans' ground record.
Both teams relied on the same sides which did duty last week end, and there were ten thousand spectators when the players came out, the Grecians with their sleeves rolled right up to their elbows.

EXETER CITY
Crompton won the toss, and Exeter played with the wind behind them in the first half. The game opened sensationally, a clever dribble by Deacon winning a corner. Fryer punched out the flag kick with Smith charging in, practically on top of him, and the ball was hurriedly put to touch by Pollard.
It was at once evident that the "Swans" were in exceedingly lively fettle, and wished to catch the Grecians' defence off its guard in the early stages.
Exeter, however, stuck to their guns, one or two raids along the wing by Shelton and Mathieson giving the ginger headed Morley some anxious moments. Mitton dribbled through on the right wing and centred the ball, which was kicked away by Milne.
TEAMS LEVEL AT HALF TIME
Smith gained possession in midfield, and manoeuvred cleverly for an opening, but Mitton got the upper hand of him, and play returned to midfield. Deacon shot a yard wide following a round of quick passing, and then, two minutes later, to the great of the crowd Swansea took the lead. It was a very fine solo joy run by Hole which beat the City defence. A brilliant dribble at top speed took him almost to the back line, and he cut inwards to beat Fryer with a rising cross-shot from five yards' range. The cheering had barely died away when the City equalised through a mistake on the part of the Swansea goalkeeper. He first fumbled and then dropped a centre from Matthews, and Devlin whipped the ball into the net without hesitation. Just afterwards another similar attack ended with Milne kicking out from the goal-line, and at half-time the score was: Swansea 1 Exeter City 1. Swansea took the lead in the second half within two minutes.
After a sharp skirmish on the wing Hole gained possession twenty
yards from the goal, and beat Fryer with
sudden shot. Fryer
expected a centre, and the ball rebounded into the net off his foot. When the half was eight minutes old Swansea scored again, Deacon tempting Fryer out and walking the ball into the net. With eighteen minutes to go Williams scored Swansea's fourth goal from a free-kick, the ball going into the net off the under side of the cross-bar, and a minute later the "nap hand" was completed by Thompson with a header from Hole's corner kick.
CITY RESERVES V COVENTRY RESERVES
Undaunted by their recent reverses, due in no small measure Faved to injuries, Exeter City Reserves took the field confidently at St James's Park this afternoon for their Southern League match with Coventry City Reserves. Exeter City reverted to their 8d "gate," by which it is hoped will result in larger attendances. The City Reserves included Purrington (Heavitree United), who performed creditably last week, whilst Lendon, also of Heavitree United, was given a trial at outside left in place of Dockray.
Exeter:
Dart; Bell, Flynn; Purrington, Southway, Clarke; Camble, Vowles, Drew, Crockford, and Lendon.
Coventry:
Findlay; Campling, Graham; turday Howat, Day, Rowley; Blakeman, Mulcahy, Warren, Herbert, and Robinson.
Referee: Mr H.F.Curtis.
A miskick by Southway let Warren through, but his shot was mis-directed, and Dart saved. At the other end Lendon tested Findlay with a swerving left-foot shot, and Drew sent over the bar from Crockford's pass.
Exeter played vastly better football than of late, and Lendon and Vowles won applause for their attempts to force a goal. Coventry opened the scoring midway through the second half, Warren beating Dart from twenty yards' range with a grounder.
Findlay had his work cut out to save from Crockford, while Vowles rattled the advertisement hoardings behind the goal with a cannon-like drive. Lendon, who had played a very fine game, equalised from Southway's pass five minutes before the finish.
Result:
City Reserves 1, Coventry Reserves 1.
OKEHAMPTON v. CITY RESERVES
An Interesting Friendly
Wednesday, October 25th.
Whenever Exeter City visit Okehampton they are always sure of a downright good welcome, and when the Grecians made the journey over the moors on Wednesday to play an exhibition game against the local team it was no exception.
The match was of special interest in view of the fact that a trial was given by Okehampton to England, a young goalkeeper who is at present with Taunton Town, and who has represented Somerset County. Although of small build for a custodian he has a pair of safe hands, and good ideas of positional play. One shot he saved from Kirk at about six yards' range was little short of brilliant, whilst on another occasion the manner in which he got rid of corner-kick with a flying punch was reminiscent of Dick Pym.
As to the game itself, it was more interesting than the usual exhibition affair, and Okehampton, although defeated by six-two put up a spirited performance.
Their goals were scored by Acton and Friend, while Kirk (4) and Vowles (2) scored for Exeter.
