City V Norwich

Saturday, November 4th. St James's Park, Exeter.

EXETER CITY 2 NORWICH CITY 0.

Last season: City 2 Norwich 0.

Norwich City, were bottom of the competition after losing at Exeter last season, but from that point they have gone ahead, and a judicious strengthening of the forward line combined with the settling of the players into their best positions, has now given the "Canaries" one of the best teams they have had during many a season. J.G.Peart, the experienced centre-forward from Port Vale, has made a big difference to the attack, and another newcomer to Norwich who has made good is J.Lythgoe, formerly of Newport County. The only other stranger to the regular eleven is S.Wright, a hefty half-back from Bolton Wanderers. Exeter relied on the team which did so well against Swansea Town last Saturday, Mathies on again leading the forwards. The afternoon was fine, but there were only 4,000 spectators on the ground when at 3.10 o'clock the teams came out, as follows:

EXETER CITY
Fryer
Pollard Ackroyd
Rigby Mitton Crompton
Matthews Kirk Mathieson Crockford Shelton.

Referee: Mr R. Lethaby, of Bristol.

Stoakes Lythgoe Dennison Stewart Austin
Wright Martin Wilkinson
Hope Hodge
O'Hagan
NORWICH CITY

The visitors won the toss, and Exeter had to face the sun in the opening half. From the kick-off Kirk endeavoured to send Mathieson through between the full-backs, but Hodge kicked the ball back to O'Hagar who sent to midfield. Mitton secured from Dennison and put Exeter back on the attack, and Kirk rounded Hodge at top speed but was then checked by Hope.

A corner, taken by Matthews, caused some excitement, but was eventually cleared by Wright. Again Exeter pressed, and Shelton was sent away in style by Mathieson. The winger returned the ball smartly to the centre, and Mathieson steadied himself and shot with great force only to see O'Hagan jump up and punch the flying leather high over the bar. It was a fine shot, met with n equally fine save. an

Further attacks followed in an abundance of thrills, with all the forwards and half-backs joining in, and against other than a first rate defence the City must have scored. Stoakes got his first chance on the Norwich left-wing after twenty minutes, and his solo effort gave Norwich their most promising position thus far. Lythgoe missed badly in front of the Exeter goal, and at the other end Mathieson sliced wildly over the bar following a wonderful piece of dribbling by Shelton, who beat the visiting backs and pushed the ball invitingly across the goal-mouth.

Exeter were deservedly rewarded for their endeavours after the interval, scoring after two and fifteen minutes. The first goal followed a free kick by Pollard, who placed the ball well into the goal-mouth. Mathieson shot smartly, but his drive hit one of the Norwich backs on the legs, and Crockford netted the rebound. Matthews scored the second goal, cutting in from the wing at top speed and firing the ball past O'Hagan from twenty yards out. It was a brilliant goal by the young Exeter winger.

NORWICH RESERVES v CITY RESERVES

This Southern League encounter between the reserve teams of Norwich and Exeter City at "The Nest" opened in bright sunshine before a moderate attendance. Dockray won the toss, and Exeter played up the slope with the sun at their backs.

Norwich:- Dennington; Woolley and Smith; Bradbrook, Gurkin, and Hannah; Rowell, Mills, Taylor, Lane, and Woodhouse.

Exeter:- England; Flynn and Bell; Litten, Southway, and Clarke;
Parsons, Camble, Devlin, Newberry, and Dockray.

Exeter Reserves displayed neat midfield tactics, but their finishing efforts were lacking, although Clarke came close to scoring with a good attempt which was saved by Dennington at the expense of a corner. England made a brilliant save at the feet of Taylor, but was beaten by Smith from the penalty spot after Flynn had handled. Half-time: Norwich 1 Exeter 0.

Two minutes after the resumption Woodhouse increased the home side's lead with a terrific shot, the ball going in just under the bar. Devlin and Parsons both had to retire, injured, and Taylor headed a third goal. Final: Norwich 3 Exeter 0.
