Match 40
2nd April 1921
Luton Town (h)

Reserve Friendly
Torquay Town (a)

ECFC 1-0 Luton Town
Scorer: Vowles
Attendance: 5,000

The Grecians's Welcome Win.

Glorious weather favoured the match at Exeter this afternoon, between the City and Luton Town. It was, in fact, almost too hot for football.

The Grecians, without a win for two and a half months, were expected to put up a great fight for the points, and in this respect the match was of much more importance to Exeter City than to the Lutonians, who have won a very good position in the Third League this season, but are out of the running for the Championship.
Pollard, who has been in excellent form for the City Reserves throughout the season, was given his first opportunity with the Chiefs's because of Coleburne's injury.

Directors Reduce Entry Prices
The decision of the City Directors to reduce the charge for admission to the ground from One Shilling and 3d (6.25 pence) to One Shilling (5 pence) for today and for the remainder of the season was very popular, and the gatemen at the turnstiles had a happier crowd to deal with than at any previous time this campaign.

The Exeter City Military Band, conducted as usual by Mr George Newman, enlivened the period of waiting with enjoyable musical selections.

Exeter City:-
Pym. Pollard. Feebery. Crawshaw. Carrick. Green. Appleton. Makin. Shields. Vowles. Dockray.

Referee:- Mr E. Tolfree, of Southampton.

Luton Town:-
Bailey. Lennon. Semple. Molyneux. Roe. Walsh. McKechnie. Butcher. Simms. Mathieson. Bookman.

Luton, looking very smart in white shirts and black knickers, were on the field first, and were quickly followed by Pym and the rest of the Grecians. There were about 5000 spectators assembled when Simms won the toss, setting Exeter to face strong sunshine in the opening period. Both goalkeepers were attired in royal blue jerseys.

Valuable Points won by Vowles's Goal.
Exeter City, struggling desperately for points, managed to get the available brace against Luton. That victory went to the most deserving side cannot for a moment be questioned.
Vowles, the pick of the City attack, had hard luck in failing to place the Grecians ahead of two occasions in the first-half, but he had the satisfaction after the interval of putting the ball into the net, and thus scoring the winning goal.
From Dockray's corner Shields attempted to get to the ball, but he was hemmed in. The leather, however, went to Vowles, who with a great shot which set the crossbar vibrating, drove the ball past Bailey from off the woodwork. Play had been in progress for twenty-two minutes when the goal was scored, and with it the points won.
It is only fair to say that Luton were disorganised through an injury to Simms after 10 minutes. He limped through the game at outside-right from then onwards, and McKechnie, who went to the centre, was quite overshadowed by Carrick, who was on the top of his form.
Shields seemed unable to get into his stride, and was less conspicuous in this match than in any since he joined the club.
Pollard (pictured), is to be congratulated on a very successful debut. He played a reliable, steady game, and kicked with good judgement and extreme accuracy.

Reserve Match.
Torquay Town 2-1 City Reserves
.
The City Reserves fulfilled a "friendly" engagement before a very large crowd at Plainmoor, in brilliant weather.

Torquay were the first to become aggressive, forcing a corner, which was nicely cleared by Betteridge.
Hesmondhalgh was next conspicuous with some clever work in the Exeter front line, but Taylor put behind when well placed. Exeter continued to attack, however, and Gartrell saved several shots from Hetherington and Taylor.

Half-time:- Torquay Town 0-0 City Reserves.

Counter and Crad Evans scored for Torquay after the change of ends, and two minutes before the finish Hesmondhalgh got a goal.

Full- time:- Torquay Town 2-1 City Reserves.
