Boscombe Out-Played in Cup Replay

Exeter City made no mistake today in their replayed cup-tie against Boscombe. Showing great improvement on Saturday's form they won easily by three goals to one.

From the start there was no question as to the superiority of the Grecians. Although Boscombe played pluckily and had quite a fair share of the exchanges they were out-played in all the finer points of the game. At times they gave glimpses of the form which enabled them to draw at Exeter on Saturday, but their passing lacked the precision of the Grecians', whose half-backs placed the ball repeatedly on the toes of the forwards.

VOWLES AT CENTRE FORWARD

The City's re-arranged attack did splendidly. Vowles, chosen to play centre-forward with Mathieson on his left, led the line with all his old dash, and distributed the ball evenly. Kirk and Matthews formed a clever right-wing, and although Mathieson was inclined to overdo the solo work, he frequently drew the defence out of position, and allowed the other forwards to take the full advantage from his openings. Shelton was the least conspicuous of the line, but made amends for other failures by scoring a good goal. Pollard and Ackroyd were excellent in defence, and it was pleasing to note that they had recovered from their "nerves" of last Saturday. As a matter of fact, Flynn quite justified the confidence reposed in him as goalkeeper. He made some very good saves, and his clever anticipation twice prevented his goal from downfall.

BOSCOMBE FORWARDS DID NOT SHINE

Boscombe were decidedly patchy in their play, much of their midfield work being spoiled by faulty finishing or a lack of direction in passing. Although beaten three times, Heron gave a good display, and Saxton and Lamb got through any amount of work with distinction. The half-backs tackled well, but were not equal to Rigby, Mitton, and Crompton in constructive work.

With the exception of Smith and Wakeley the forwards did not shine, being too easily robbed of the ball through lack of pace.

EXETER'S GOALS

Exeter scored in the first few minutes of each half, Kirk on each occasion finding the net.

In the first case Vowles gave him a gilt-edged chance with a neat pass, and Heron was helpless to save.

The second goal was the result of weakness in the Boscombe defence, both Wingham and Saxton having opportunities to clear before Kirk pounced on the ball and beat Heron at close range.

Shelton got the City's third goal from a corner kick, twenty minutes after the resumption, with a low cross-shot which Heron could not see owing to the crowd of players in his line of sight.

Davey was off the field for twenty minutes in the second half, and this considerably handicapped the Boscombe attack, but they never gave up trying, and in the closing minutes Smith, with a shot which hit the bottom of the cross-bar and bounced down into the net, scored their only goal.

The game, played on a heavy surface, was so fast and strenuous that both teams were obviously tired towards the end.

Attendance 5,000.
