Southern League
Newport Reserves (h)
Newport County 2-0 ECFC
Attendance: 10,000
NEWPORT COUNTY 2-0 EXETER CITY
Cook, Lowes
Saturday, August 25th.
Half-time: 0 - 0.
Referee: Mr A.F.Davies, Bristol.
Newport: Carr; Whitton, Ogley; Groves, Knowles, Carney; Charlton, Conner, Bell, Lowes, Cook.
City: Bailey; Coleburne, Flynn; Hunter, Whelan, Crawshaw; Lievesley, Batten, Kirk, Davis, Dockray.
Attendance 10,000.
DESCRIPTION
Rain threatened at mid-day, but the weather for the match, although very dull, was dry. Hunter, the City's new skipper, won the toss in competition with Knowles, but no advantage was to be gained. The County forwards were very quick off the ark in the opening minutes, and the play was all at the Exeter end until Coleburne stepped in with a timely clearance.
Cook the ball well up on the County left and hooked it across, but Bell's shot was wide of the mark. End to end play followed, and Lievesley tried hard to get going, but support was lacking. Bell should have opened the score when the game was just over half an hour old. A clever movement on the County right wing gave him a clear opening. He tried to stab the ball into the net from short range, but instead shot nearly to the corner flag. Setting a great pace, the County forwards again found a way through, and Cook and Bell sped goal-wards with the Grecians in pursuit. It seemed certain that a score would materialise, but Cook put the ball over the bar.
Crawshaw Injured.
A corner to Newport was cleared in style by Coleburne, and the City then had the misfortune to lose Crawshaw, whose left leg was injured in a collision with Groves, and the Exeter man had to be carried off. Bailey dealt effectively with a shot from Bell, and Kirk narrowly missed the Newport goal with a real "pile-driver."
Second Half
It turned out to be Crawshaw's ankle that was damaged, and Exeter came out for the second half with only ten men. Davis took over
Crawshaw's place at left half, and the four City forwards went off with a great rush, Dockray being especially prominent. But fine work by Carney put Newport on the move again, and Flynn had to make a desperate clearance right in the goalmouth.
A mis-kick by Coleburne gave away a corner, and when Charlton centred the ball Knowles fell over. The referee, despite protests from Hunter and his colleagues, ordered a penalty, which Carney put wide, much to the evident displeasure of the crowd.
A goal, however, was not long delayed. Cook, who had received too much rope all along, took a pass from the centre, and drove the ball low into the net almost from the goal line. Bailey was well beaten by this deceptive shot, the ball passing across him, striking the far post and rebounding into the goal.
Then a dramatic save by Bailey from a corner kick was quickly followed by a second goal, Charlton crossing the ball neatly for Lowes to find the top corner of the net with a terrific drive. At the other end Carr saved brilliantly from Kirk.

CITY RESERVES v. NEWPORT RESERVES
Details
CITY RESERVES 1 (Wray)
NEWPORT RESERVES 2 (Taylor Sanderson)
Referee: Mr E.H.Rogers.
Half-time 1-1.
City Reserves:- Pavey; Pollard, Geary; Gilchrist, McIntosh, Crompton; Shelton, Murray, Wray, Lowson, Lendon.
Newport Reserves:- Rounds; White, Dimmock; Evans, Nairn, Lewis; Britton, Taylor, Sanderson, Gittens, Gaughan.
The ground was in excellent condition after the recent heavy rain, and the crowd at the start numbered about three thousand. Crompton was beaten by Nairn in the toss, and play began with the visitors making the first attack through Sanderson. The Newport man kicked the ball too far in front, and Pavey easily saved.
Wray headed wide from a corner by Shelton, and the first goal fell to Newport, through Taylor, who met Gittens's pass with a rattling volley, and beat Pavey with a shot in the top left hand corner of the net. Just before half-time Wray levelled the score with a splendid shot, and thoroughly deserved his goal.
Midway through the second half Shelton had to leave the field suffering from concussion. Rounds saved from McIntosh, Crompton, Wray, and Murray, but when Pavey pushed out a shot from Taylor at the other end Sanderson rushed up and put his side ahead.
