Southern League

Saturday, November 25th,
at the County Ground.
NORTHAMPTON TOWN 3 EXETER 0
Attendance: 7000
Last season: Northampton 2 City 3.
Having overcome their opponents in the Cup Competition after a replay during the week, Exeter City were at the County Ground, Northampton, this afternoon for a League game. The weather was fine, and the ground in good condition. There were about seven thousand spectators present when the teams appeared.
NORTHAMPTON TOWN
Smith
Watson Jeffs
Forrest Bedford Williams
Pease Graham Lockett Myers Page
EXETER CITY
Fryer
Pollard Ackroyd
Rigby Clarke Crompton
Matthews Kirk Vowles Mathieson Shelton
Crompton won the toss. The "Cobblers" were the first to become prominent, Page making a raid on the left, but his centre came to nothing owing to the inability of his colleagues to get into the right positions. Exeter took up the attack, and Mathieson put in a shot which sailed a foot or two the wrong side of the post, and Shelton followed with a similar effort. Smith saved an excellent drive from Matthews, and at the other end Page wasted his chance by slicing the ball over the bar.
Ably led by Vowles, the Exeter forwards caused considerable trouble to Smith and his backs, but the shooting was feeble. With the game twenty minutes old the Northampton forwards got away, and Lockett crowned a good movement by heading the ball into the net, well wide of Fryer.
Exeter opened the second half in even more lively fashion, and with any luck and a little more direction in their shooting would have equalised. The best they managed was a corner, which proved abortive. Pollard tried a shot from the half-way line, which the goalkeeper punched out, and Vowles narrowly failed to ned the re bound.
Although Rigby and Crompton were the masters of the Cobblers' wingers, the City began to fade in other departments of the team, and Northampton dominated the game in the last half hour.
A penalty was awarded, from which Watson scored, and Myers got
a third goal after Fryer had run out and left his charge vacant. The score flattered Northampton to a certain extent, for there was not a difference of three goals between the sides. If Exeter City's forwards had taken all their chances in the first half, they would not have finished up on the losing team.
CITY RESERVES V SOUTHAMPTON RESERVES
Glorious weather favoured the return Southern League match at St James's Park this afternoon between the City and Southampton reserve teams. The Grecians, who were beaten by six clear goals at The Dell last Saturday, made several changes.
Pavey, the Taunton Town goalkeeper, made his first appearance in a Southern League match, and Geary of Heavitree United played right-back. Harry Wilson, who has not played for the Grecians at all this season, was drafted in at left half for Clarke, who had to go to Northampton with the "chiefs."
Exeter:
Pavey; Geary and Bell; Richards, Southway, and Wilson; Lendon, Camble, Parsons, Crockford, and Dockray.
Southampton:
Yeomans; Hough and Hooper; Christie, Campbell, and Willmott;
Blyth, Bruton, Meston, Johnson, and Andrews.
Referee:- Mr H.F.Curtis.
Crockford became the latest player to captain the Reserves, but he was beaten in the toss by Andrews, and Parsons kicked off against bright sunshine. The "Saints" were very quick the on ball, and specialised in long passing. Pavey distinguished him self with several excellent saves, notably from Campbell, the former Saints' captain, and Andrews, the present one.
A goal by Meston after ten minutes, and another by Bruton in the closing minutes, ensured victory for the Saints. Had it not been for Pavey the score might have been five or six to nil.
