DESCRIPTION
Exeter City won their first home match on Wednesday evening, defeating Merthyr Town by the only goal, scored in a game which was remarkable for excellent football despite a gale of wind and rain.
The City got no more than they deserved. They were good value for the goal they scored, and fully merited the verdict. Several team changes were made. An injury to Whelan kept him out of the centre half position, which Crompton filled. Gilchrist came in at left half for Crawshaw, who has a badly twisted ankle. Every one of the Grecians gave an exceedingly good display under conditions which could scarcely have been more adverse.
The winning goal came 18 minutes from the end, and it was the outcome of persistent attacking. A flag-kick by Dockray sent the ball across the goalmouth over the heads of several players and on to Kirk, who with a neat twise of his head spun it into the goal well out of the reach of Lindon. It was the first goal of the new season, and suitably applauded by the crowd.
Game Full of Incident.
Apart from the goal the game was full of incident. Merthyr did not accept defeat until the final whistle, and played pluckily throughout. Towards the close of the first half Dempsey rushed the ball into the net from a centre by Thorne, but the goal was not allowed to stand because of an infringement spotted by the vigilant Mr Tolfree. Lindon played a grand game for Merthyr Town, making especially good saves from Kirk, Crompton, and Davis.
