DESCRIPTION
Two Charltons were in direct opposition in today's match; they were Stanley, of Exeter, and William, of Newport. The Charlton of Newport County was born at Sunderland, and has been associated in turn with South Shields and West Ham. The weather was showery but the crowd rolled up in good style, prepared for rain or shine. A driving rainstorm just after three o'clock sent the Exeter City Military Band scurrying for cover, and it was still raining fast when the players appeared.
Knowles won the toss, and Newport had the better of the early play, attacking first on the left wing and then the right. Each raid was cleared by Crompton, but the "Ironsides" were nothing if not persistent, and a thirty yards' dribble by Conner compelled Hunter to kick behind. The corner was headed out by Davis.
Kirk's Smart Grounder.
Exeter now made headway, Dockray receiving a nice forward pass from Davis and getting the better of a tussle with Whitton. The Carlisle man dashed on and middled the ball, but Ogley cleared. Splendid work on Exeter's right wing enabled Matthews to send in a well placed centre for Davis to trap the ball and shoot for goal, Carr making a spectacular save at the expense of a corner. Newport, however, were still making the most of any opportunity that dropped in their laps, and the Exeter Charlton won applause for his strong and reliable defensive play.
After twelve minutes Batten gained possession near the half way line and coolly tricked Groves before slipping an ideal pass through to Kirk. "Jazzo" controlled the ball well, and went on to
beat Carr all ends up with a smart grounder. Exeter continued on the aggressive, and Kirk nearly repeated his earlier success but this time Carr saved his swift cross-shot in brilliant style. Midway through the half Bell got away for Newport and forced a corner off Hunter, but it was the City skipper who headed out the flag-kick, and Bailey saved at the second attempt a fierce drive from Bell, who was playing a great game in the County attack. Straight from Bailey's clearance Batten and Kirk took play to the Newport end, and Kirk delighted the crowd with his second successful shot with a low ball that went through Carr's legs.
Second Half.
Within a minute of the restart the City increased their lead with such a brilliant goal that it fairly "brought down the house." Gilchrist fed Batten in midfield, and the centre forward whipped a long pass forward to Matthews, who beat Ogley for possession, drew Carr out of his goal and scored with a swift low shot. Then Dockray got right through to the goal line and slipped a ground pass across to Batten, who should have scored, but allowed Carr to block his rather weak shot.
The City were all over Newport now, and from the centre of the field the forwards got away in a line, and Matthews dropped the ball across for Carr to jump and fist away. It came back to Kirk, whose fine volley was saved by Ogley with his hands. The penalty was taken by Kirk, and a "veil had better be drawn over his spot kick," for the ball went yards up the big bank into the thick of the crowd. Kirk later missed another scoring chance, but Batten cleverly converted a centre from Matthews for the fourth goal, and Davis wound up the proceedings by going through on his own for the fifth. It was the City's biggest victory since November 1914.
Southern League
NEWPORT RESERVES V CITY RESERVES.
Exeter City Reserves, in charge of Mr Reg Loram, did very well to force a draw in their Southern League match at Somerton Park. Bob Pollard captained the side, and of a hard and fast game the junior Grecians had a full share.
Play was full of interest, and the crowd of 7,000 was kept "on its toes" throughout. The City were unlucky in having an early goal by Lendon disallowed, and a claim for a penalty refused. Whelan, who was a doubtful starter yesterday, not the City's goal very skilfully, Potter and Lendon giving valuable aid.
The result was
Newport 1 Exeter City 1.
The following represented the
City: Pavey; Pollard and Flynn; Whelan, McIntosh, and Potter; Lievesley, Murray, Wray, Lowson, and Lendon.
CITY RESERVES' SUCCESS
Aberaman Outplayed in Brisk Evening Game
Aberaman 1 City Reserves 3.
Monday, September 3rd.
Following on their very creditable performance at the Newport County ground on Saturday, when they drew, Exeter City Reserves distinguished themselves on Monday evening by beating Aberaman on the ground of the South Wales club by three goals to one.
At the last moment it was decided to rest Wray, who had hurt his ankle and knee in the Saturday match, and the centre-forward position was entrusted to Donald Gilchrist, the Argyllshire man. Otherwise the eleven was unchanged.
Two Goals Before Half Time.
The Grecians assumed the upper hand from the outset, and after fifteen minutes' play Gilchrist was going through cleverly, when he was brought down unfairly close to the goal. The penalty was successfully taken by Flynn.
Continuing to set the pace Exeter attacked repeatedly, and a beautifully judged long pass by Murray was taken by Lievesley in his stride. He cut in towards goal and shot hard and high, and the goalkeeper just managed to tip the ball over the bar. When Lendon middled the ball from the flag-kick Lievesley headed into goal very neatly, and the City led at half time, 2-nil.
Second Half.
Play in the second half was much the same territorially as in the first, but both sides showed more dash.
Lowson added another goal for Exeter. Gilchrist gave him the ball just outside the penalty area, and Lowson dribbled his way past two defenders before shooting with great force. The leather was stopped by the goalkeeper, but he was unable to hold it, and it went on to the post, rebounded to the goalkeeper's face and cannoned off into the back of the net.
Aberaman's goal was notched by their inside right in the last minute of the game. Exeter Reserves were the stronger side in all departments, and thoroughly deserved their victory.
Team:- Pavey; Pollard, and Flynn; Whelan, McIntosh, and Potter; Lievesley, Murray, Gilchrist, Lowson, and Lendon.
