MERTHYR TOWN v. EXETER CITY
Thursday, September 6th.
Referee: Mr E.Tolfree, Southampton. Attendance:- 8,000.
Half-time:- Merthyr 2 City 0.
Merthyr: Lindon; Langford, Ferrans; Callaghan, Foxall, Wimbs; Thorne, Arblaster, Nash, A.Jones, V.Jones.
City:- Bailey; Coleburne, Charlton; Hunter, Crompton, Gilchrist; Matthews, Kirk, Batten, Davis, Dockray.
DESCRIPTION
Exeter opened strongly, Batten running through only to be dispossessed at the last moment by Lindon, who dived on the ball. Good play by the Welsh right wing resulted in Bailey punching the ball over the bar for a corner, from Nash's fierce drive. The corner was fielded by Bailey.
V.Jones then got away for Merthyr, and put across an almost perfect centre for Abe Jones to head the ball into the net, after ten minutes' play. From another well placed cross by V.Jones a low drive into the corner of the net placed Merthyr two up, Bailey having no chance. Exeter rallied, and Matthews and Dockray gave Lindon one or two difficult shots, but found the goalkeeper safe. With better luck Dockray would have scored, but again he was foiled by Lindon. In the last minute prior to the interval Kirk missed an open goal.
Second Half.
The City attacked on the resumption, but offside spoiled the move.
Crompton was the star of Exeter's attack and defence, and gave his forwards many fine chances, but neither Hunter nor Gilchrist were able to hold Merthyr's speedy wingers, and as a result the City goal was frequently under pressure. Merthyr's third goal was obtained in a peculiar way. Foxall lobbed the ball forward, and Coleburne kicked back to Bailey, who missed it as it rolled into the empty net.
