Last season: Southend 0 City 1.

SOUTHEND UNITED

Bissett J.H.Evans
Woodland Halley

Referee:- Mr R.Lethaby, of Bristol.

Dockray Mathieson Devlin Kirk Matthews Crompton Mitton Rigby Flynn Pollard
Fryer
EXETER CITY

The City made a last minute change, Rigby returning at right half in place of Clarke. Southend won the toss, and elected to have the advantage of the corner-to-corner wind, which was blow ing hard at the commencement. Southend were the first to become aggressive, Firth going down the wing in masterly style, only to be halted by Flynn after beating Crompton. Dockray made a good dribble through for Exeter, but his centre was behind the other forwards, and the ball was intercepted by Goodwin. After another of Dockray's runs Devlin headed the ball strongly

towards goal, and Hall punched clear at the expense of a corner. At the other end, and from a similar move, Slater headed goal, and beat Fryer. Goodwin missed an open goal, scooping the ball high over the bar from three or four yards' range. for

After Evans had lost a golden opportunity for increasing his side's lead Davies took advantage of a short pass from Halley to register Southend's second goal. Evans scored another just before half-time, when the score was: Southend 3 Exeter City 0.

Although Pollard and Ackroyd exchanged places this did nothing to stem the tide, and Davies banged the ball into the net after it had rebounded off the goalpost from his first shot. The fifth and final goal came from Woodland, who got his foot to a ground pass by Firth.

CITY RESERVES V. TORQUAY UNITED

Southern League:

There was not a big crowd at St James's Park this afternoon, on the occasion of the first "Junior Devon Derby" took place. Clarke won the toss, and the City had the advantage of a light breeze at their backs in the first half.

City:- Pavey; Ackroyd and Bell; Clarke, Southway, and Leathlen; Newman, Crockford, Parsons, Vowles, and Davis.

Torquay:- Gartrell; Rice and Gaskell; Thompson, Hookway, and Preston; Burley, Burch, Hill, Townsend, and Nettlesome.

Referee: Mr Davies.

The Torquay United side had a familiar look about them, for of their eleven players four have served Exeter City, namely Percy Hill, Townsend, Hookway, and Gaskell.

The match produced no goals, and was chiefly memorable for the display of Gartrell. But the best chance of the match came to the Magpies in the closing minutes, when Burley failed in front of the Exeter goal with only Pavey to beat.
