EXETER CITY v. BOSCOMBE

Saturday, September 8th.

Referee:- Mr F.Todman, of Croydon. Attendance:- 7,000.

Half-time:- City nil Boscombe two.

City:- Bailey; Coleburne, Charlton; Hunter, Crompton, Whelan; Matthews, Kirk, Batten, Davis, Dockray.

Boscombe: Heron; Wingham, Lamb; Butt, Smith, Voisey; Miller, Lister, Davey, Armstrong, Robinson.

DESCRIPTION

The weather was brilliant, and a large crowd had assembled by the time the teams fielded. Voisey, the old Millwall half back, won the toss, and Exeter had to face the bright sunshine from the St. James's Road end.

Hunter found touch close to the Boscombe corner flag with the sort of kick that would have done credit to a Rugby back. Voisey and Lamb were much in the picture in the early moments, and the City right wing pair could make nothing of them.

The Boscombe front line, on the other hand, proved to be in a sprightly mood, and Bailey was called upon in rapid succession by Armstrong, Lister, and Davey.

Unfortunately the City several times fell into the same sort of misunderstandings which proved so fatal last season, and several openings were wasted because of it. Ten minutes after the start Davey finished off a capital movement with Lister and Miller by scoring at close quarters.

Boscombe continued to play a fine robust game, which unsettled the Grecians, who were yards slower by comparison. After fifteen minutes Davey set off from the centre line, and he gave Lister a chance which was accepted, and Bailey was beaten for the second time.

It continued to be all Boscombe for some time, though the City gradually asserted themselves a little, chiefly by the efforts of individuals, and chiefly Dockray. They checked the aggression of Boscombe frequently by a judicious use of the one back game, and the interval arrived without further addition to the score. There was no great difference in the second half, except that the ball was handled too frequently by Lamb when in a tight corner. Exeter were "all at sea," and rarely troubled Boscombe to any serious extent.

Rarely did the Grecians realise in time the right thing to do and how to do it, and their downfall was complete and not in the least unmerited.

A week ago the spectators at St James's Park saw Exeter City in championship form. Today's game found them at their worst. The introduction of Whelan at left half was not a successful move, and on a very poor day for the City they were best served by Dockray, Matthews, Hunter, and Bailey.

Old Acquaintances.

Two redoubtable City half-backs of other days renewed some old friendships at St James's Park during the week, Sam Johnson, and Billy Smith.

CARDIFF CITY RESERVES v EXETER CITY RESERVES

Details

CARDIFF RESERVES  1 Taylor
EXETER RESERVES    2 Wray Shelton

Referee: Mr A.Richards, Bristol. Half-time score:- Cardiff 0 Exeter 1.

Cardiff: Robb; Brittan, Mason; H.P.Evans, Jenkins, Wake; Turnbull, Hagan, Jones, Nock, Taylor.

Exeter: Pavey; Pollard, Flynn; Potter, McIntosh, Gilchrist; Lievesley, Murray, Wray, Shelton, Lendon.

DESCRIPTION

Exeter began badly by missing a penalty, awarded for hand-ball against Brittan. Wray took the spot kick, which did not deceive Robb. Exeter were not to be denied, however, and a combined move between Shelton and Wray ended with the centre-forward beating Robb with a brilliant shot. Murray for Exeter, and J.Jones, for Cardiff, missed easy chances.

Determined to wipe off the deficit Cardiff City played superb football on the resumption, but the Grecians never wavered, and in a fast counter-attack Shelton beat Robb with a great shot.

Stung by this second reverse Cardiff City attacked strongly on the right and Taylor reduced their deficit from Turnbull's centre.
