DESCRIPTION

There were moments of great excitement in the match at Exeter on Wednesday evening between the City and Portsmouth. It was a fast game all the way through, although there were interludes as mediocre as other were thrilling. The contest, although providing good entertainment, was not notable for particularly skilful or thoughtful football. It was of the "cup-tie" type, and possibly the result was as fair as could be expected.

Vigour and Determination.

Exeter City improved greatly from last Saturday. They played with much more vigour and determination, though understanding was still lacking in the forward line. Their speed and dash won them opportunities, but hesitancy in front of goal lost them again.

The forwards seemed to lack inspiration, and seldom worked together satisfactorily, despite the good support which was given them by Davies, Parker, and Martin.

Both teams were indebted to their goalkeepers. Kane was put on the early alert when he had to run out as far as the penalty line to prevent Matthews scoring. Dockray improved after an uncertain start, and put in the best shot of the match, a powerful grounder from fifteen yards which just missed the far post.

In the second half Batten netted the ball from Dockray's pass, but was ruled offside, and Bailey made outstanding clearances from Haines, Beedie, and Watson.
