DESCRIPTION

The weather was dull and very sultry, and the general opinion was that a thunder-storm was imminent. Some excitement was caused shortly before three o'clock by the arrival from Blackdown Camp of a char-a-banc party of the 1st Devons, sporting streamers in the City colours and brimful of enthusiasm. Many of them were allowed ring seats in front of the enclosure, and the Grecians were given a great reception as they entered the field.

Thompson beat Hunter in the toss for choice of ends, and at the outset play was patchy, but Exeter settled down first, and a clever opening was engineered by Kirk for Matthews, whose shot went over the bar.

Wilson cleared with a strong header right in front of Reading's goal from a free-kick taken by Kirk for a foul on Hunter by Goldie. At the other end Coleburne intercepted a pass from Goldie to Davis, and set Exeter on the move again, and Thomson had to give a corner. The flag-kick, taken by Dockray, was cleared by Wilson.

Over the Bar.

Kirk should have given Exeter the lead after twenty minutes, a pass from Dockray leaving him clear of the opposition on the edge of the penalty area, but his shot was badly directed and the ball was sent about three feet wide and too high. Jennings then broke away for Reading, and beat both backs in turn, but Coleburne recovered in time and passed the ball back to Bailey. Reading again made swift progress, and a centre from Scott was headed out by Coleburne. A few minutes before the interval Jennings received from Scott, and from 25 yards sent in a fierce curling shot. Bailey managed to get his fingers to the ball, but failed in his attempt to get it round the post, and a tremendous cheer went up as the ball struck the net for the opening goal.

Apart from the evergreen Crompton, and to some extent Dockray and Murray, the whole City team were disappointing, and on the run of the game Reading fully deserved to win.

DESCRIPTION

The afternoon was dull, and fine rain fell at intervals. Pollard won the toss, and Wake cleared from Gallogley in Exeter's first attack. That there was no score at half time was mainly due to the excellence of Exeter's defence, in which Pollard and Flynn played leading roles.

Cardiff took the lead early in the second half through Nock, who beat Pavey with a fierce left-footer after taking the ball almost from the half-way line. Almost immediately Batten equalised from a similar move, beating several players en route to goal.

Batten gave Exeter the lead, heading in a centre from Lievesley, and completed his "hat-trick" with another header, this time from Shelton's centre. Jenkins shot wide from a free-kick, and Pavey saved brilliantly from Wake.

Final score
