SWINDON TOWN v EXETER CITY. Saturday, January 27th,
at Swindon.
The weather was glorious when the Exeter City party arrived at Swindon for the return match with the Railwaymen. Exeter City had Crompton for Clarke (injured) and Pollard at right back. Swindon made several changes, Harold Fleming being the inside right, and Weston, Wareing, and Johnson reappeared after injuries. A crowd of five thousand was present to see the teams line up in the following order:
Swindon: Nash; Coleburne and Weston; Dawe, Hawley, and Wareing; Norton, Fleming, Phillipson, Johnson, and Davies.
Exeter:- Fryer; Pollard and Ackroyd; Rigby, Mitton, and Crompton;Matthews, Kirk, Devlin, Crockford, and Dockray.
Referee: Mr R.C.Wildig, of Southampton.
Last season: Swindon 1 Exeter City 1.
Exeter City took the field for the first time in royal blue shirts, the change being made at the request of the referee, to assist him in distinguishing between the two sets of players. Crompton won the toss. Weston cleared Exeter's first attack, but a second one quickly followed, Nash saving from Devlin. Offside against Fleming spoiled Swindon's first move of any importance, and at the other end a beautiful centre from Dockray was missed by all the other forwards.
Fleming's neat footwork caused the City defence some trouble, and a header from the old International was saved by Fryer, who, looked strange in a white shirt, at the expense of a corner.
A foul by Ackroyd on Norton on the very edge of the penalty area spelt dander but from Dawe's free kick Fleming put the ball wide of the far post. Fleming again put wide, this time from a centre from Davies. Another free kick was awarded to Swindon, on their left, although the infringement was not apparent. Johnson took the kick, and the ball flashed into the net just underneath the crossbar for the opening goal. Mitton was injured, and had to retire, whereupon Crompton took up the centre half position with Crockford at left half.
Five minutes before the interval Mitton returned and resumed its normal formation.
Then Davies got clean away and his centre was well taken by Phillipson. Fryer, however, was in the way, and the ball bounc ed back to Norton, who lifted it over the goalkeeper and into the net for the second goal.
Half-time: Swindon 2 City 0.
Second Half.
Weston of Swindon Town scored for Exeter. Dockray got away on the wing at full speed, and when Kirk closed in Nash missed the ball. It went to Weston, who in attempting to clear put through his own goal.
Exeter City Reserves v Swindon Reserves.
Following upon their victory over the Railwaymen's Reserves last week, the Grecians' second string entertained hopes today of effecting a "double" at St James's Park. The weather remained unsettled, and there was the usual Reserve Match attendance.
CITY RESERVES 4 (Newman 2 Parsons Shelton) SWINDON RESERVES 2 Cooke Poppitt
Southway won the toss, and elected to defend the St. James's Road end in the first half. Play opened tamely, but midway through. the half Newman went off on his own, beat Beasant for speed, and cut in smartly, then with a splendid cross-shot planted the ball into the corner of the net.
Exeter's lead was increased by Newman and Parsons after the interval, whereupon Cooke and Poppitt scored for Swindon. The scoring was rounded off by Shelton, who had previously missed several easy chances.
The teams were:
City Reserves:- Pavey; Southway, Wilson; Richards, Duke, Davis;
Newman, Camble, Parsons, Shelton, and Lendon.
Swindon Reserves:- Dowling; Benfield, Beasant; Cooper, Archer, Ing; Wilkins, Radmore, Cooke, Daniels, and Poppitt. Referee:- Mr S.F.Hyde.
James Duke, the centre half from Scunthorpe, who came to Exeter on a month's trial, has been engaged for the remainder of the season.
