Saturday, February 10th,
at St James's Park, Exeter.
EXETER CITY 4 NEWPORT COUNTY 0.
Last season: City 2 Newport 2.
Newport County made an eleventh hour change in the team to oppose Exeter City in the return match at St James's Park today, "Happy" Hampton, the selected centre-forward, being unwell. The mention of Hampton, of course, brings to mind his appearance at St James's Park with the Aston Villa team in the famous Cup-tie of pre-war days, also the goal he scored, a lovely header from Barber's free kick.
Heavy rains during the week had made St James's Park wetter even than was the Newport County ground last week-end, and the ground sman had to be very liberal with the sawdust and sand in the neighbourhood of the centre mark and the goals.
The Exeter City Military Band, under the conductorship of Mr Geo.Newman, got the crowd in proper trim with a programme of entertaining musical selections before the players came out, and followed it up with Mr James Green's specially written "Exeter City March," or the "Grecians' Gallop, as it has become known.
Exeter City, with Pavey of Taunton making his first appearance in goal, lost the toss, and Crockford kicked off towards St James's Road.

The Grecians promptly got away with a clever concerted left wing move, and Crockford put the ball forward to Kirk, who was being responsible with a speedy sprint down the line, but the crowded off the ball. The play went to the other end, Charlton winger could not get past Ackroyd, who kicked to touch. Exeter became very aggressive, and shots by Matthews and Kirk passed
wide of the mark, and a better directed one from Crockford was saved by the goalkeeper. A fine bit of work by Ellis Crompton and Dockray ended in the ball going to Davis, who shot against the legs of a Newport player, and a corner resulting. This was cleared by Whitton.
After thirty-two minutes Rigby gave Matthews a long pass to chase, the referee ignoring appeals for offside. The Bristolian centred, Crockford meeting the ball brilliantly with his head to send it into the back of the net for the opening goal. Scarcely had the cheering died away when Crockford scored again, hooking in a lovely centre from Dockray.
Second Half.
Twenty-five minutes of the second half had elapsed when good triangular play on Exeter's right wing ended in Matthews getting well away with a pass from Kirk. The young winger centred right into the goal-mouth, and Carr, reaching for the ball underneath the crossbar, turned it into his own goal.
After Pavey had saved from Paterson in a rare attack by the County, the City promptly transferred the scene of operations. Kirk charged Griffin off the ball, and went on to shoot whilst still in his full stride. The leather crashed against the under side of the crossbar, bounced down in the mixture of mud, sand, and sawdust that constituted the goalmouth, and rolled out, but Crockford, following up, rammed it well into the back of the rigging just to make sure.
Torquay United v City Reserves.
The ground at Plainmoor was ankle deep in mud in many places, and with rain steadily falling conditions were impossible for football. After twenty-five minutes Harry Preston opened the scoring for the Magpies, netting from the rebound after a shot by Townsend had been pushed out by Fryer. A misunderstanding in the Exeter defence between Fryer and Duke was responsible for the United's second goal, scored by Burch.
With only a few minutes of the match remaining, the United delighted their supporters by the scoring of two more goals, by Bob Preston and Burley.
Final: Torquay 4, City Reserves 0.
Torquay United:- Gartrell; Rice and Gaskell; Burley, R.Preston, and Brock; Thompson, Burch, Hill, Townsend, and H.Preston.
City Reserves:- Fryer; Southway and Flynn; Richards, Duke, and Wilson; Newman, Camble, Parsons, Shelton, and Lendon..
