MILLWALL ATHLETIC 3 EXETER CITY 0.
Played at The Den, New Cross, London.
Glorious weather favoured the return match between Millwall and Exeter City at New Cross this afternoon, and the big ground at The Den looked in perfect condition. The Grecians, leaving St David's at 10.15 this morning, journeyed from Paddington by char-a-banc, and arrived in plenty of time. Millwall included Crawford, the old Reading goalkeeper, in place of Lansdale, who was dropped.
Millwall:- Crawford; Fort and Hill; Pembleton, Riddell, and Amos; Keen, Moule, Morris, Lane, and Anstiss.
City:- Pavey; Pollard and Flynn; Southway, Mitton, and Crompton;
Matthews, Davis, Crockford, Mathieson, and Dockray.
Referee:- Mr E.Tolfree, of Southampton.
Jack Fort won the toss, and Crockford set the ball rolling in the presence of ten thousand spectators. The teams were evenly matched, and a good game resulted. The play of the Lions justified their victory, but although the game did get into their stride the other forwards were hardly up to scratch.
Pavey was in brilliant form, and played his best game for the Grecians so far. Southway and Crompton were too slow, and Mitton carried a heavy burden on his shoulders. Pollard and Flynn played very well, but the forwards, apart from Davis and Mathieson, were below their best, and were weak in front of goal. At the same time there was never three goals difference between the teams, and the last two goals were scored when the game was practically over.
CITY RESERVES V YEOVIL.
With the visit of Yeovil and Petters to St James's Park today for the Southern League match with the City Reserves, supporters of the Grecians had an opportunity of renewing acquaintances with W.Wright, the old Exeter City centre-forward, and Ben Potter, a very popular half-back. Wright was the subject of a sensational transfer to Huddersfield Town for a big fee, but he was unable to settle in Yorkshire and came back to the "West-country" last year.
City Reserves:- Fryer; Bell and Harris; Richards, Duke, and Wilson; Newman, Camble, Shelton, Coopland, and Lendon.
Yeovil:- Vallis; Day and Brown; Abbott, May, and Potter; Gardiner, Bell, Wright, Edwards, and Bruzas.
Referee: Mr H.F.Curtis.
Wright and Potter, on entering the field, were given the usual "musical honours" by the Exeter City Military Band, who finished off their programme with the "Grecians' Lucky Gallop."
Wright set the ball in motion before a fair-sized crowd, but the City soon gained possession, and Newman opened up on the right till stopped by Potter.
At the other end Wright shot straight at Fryer, who had dashed out of his goal, and the custodian saved from Day just afterwards. Shelton put in a beautiful shot from twenty-five yards range, the ball just grazing the crossbar and going over. Yeovil took the lead midway through the first half, Wright directing the ball into the net with his head from the Yeovil Bell's pass.
Half-time:
City Reserves 0 Yeovil and Petters 1.
Second Half.
From a move started by Bruzas and carried on by the ball was passed across the penalty area to Wright, and the old City Edwards, the centre-forward made no mistake, shooting past Fryer close in.
The last goal was scored by Edwards, Yeovil thus winning by 2 - 1.
