BOTTOM OF THE LEAGUE
In completing the "double" against Exeter City, Plymouth Argyle emerged from their holiday programme in brilliant style. In the two matches Plymouth compiled eight goals with nothing in reply. DESCRIPTION
The game at Home Park on Christmas morning was one which will be remembered. Fore and aft the form of the winners reached a standard that has not been achieved by Plymouth for several seasons. Exeter were beaten by four clear goals, and had they sustained a heavier reverse it would not have flattered the Pilgrims in the slighest.
The Grecians made a good fight in a goal-less first half, but in that period even if they did not show a great superiority the Argyle seemed the more likely to take the lead. Logan, Corcoran, and Cherrett often harrassed the defence, and the City goal had one narrow shave, when with Bailey on the ground Logan shot hard against the upright.
Exeter's fate was settled six minutes after restarting when fine work by Leslie resulted in Cherrett finding the net with a splendid header. Once ahead the Argyle never looked back, and the Grecians were completely outplayed. While Craig throughout the second half played the part of a spectator, Bailey, Colebume, and Charlton had a gruelling time.
All the Argyle forwards were in great fettle, with Logan standing out head and shoulders above the others. His footwork left the City defence bewildered, and it was one of his many efforts which led to Cherrett scoring the second goal. Apart from forcing one corner, when Kirk threatened to get through, Exeter never got to grips with the Argyle defence. Eastwood swept through between the backs to net the third goal, and in the next minute a fourth fell to the credit of Leslie, the opening being provided by Batten.
Exeter's forwards saw very little of the ball, and the half backs were undistinguished. Although Bailey and Charlton performed very gallantly they were unable to stem the tide against them, and the City retired a badly beaten side on the second half's exchanges.

Neither team was seen to advantage, and a poor game resulted in a goal-less draw. Exeter Reserves had every bit as much of the play as their rivals but were seldom dangerous.
Pavey was the hero of the match. He was in a very resourceful and efficient mood, and it was mainly due to his skill that the City Reserves saved a point. Flynn did very well at full-back, and the two "old-stagers" and the one young one in the half back line were quite sound. There was nothing remarkable about the forward play, however. The Argyle attacked strongly in the last fifteen minutes, and hot shots from Walker and Fowler were finely saved by Pavey.
