29th December 1923
Aberdare Athletic (a)
Aberdare Athletic 0-0 ECFC Attendance: 3 000
Saturday, December 29th,
at Aberdare, Ynys Park.
ABERDARE ATHLETIC 0
EXETER CITY 0
Referee:- Mr R.Lethaby, of Bristol.
Aberdare: Duckworth; Worrall, Brooke; Sheldon, Southway, Brophy; James, Brown, Metcalf, Burgess, and Young.
Exeter City:- Bailey; Pollard, Charlton; Crawshaw, Gilchrist, Flynn; Shelton, Murray, Batten, Lowson, and Dockray.
Attendance 3,000.
DESCRIPTION
Wholesale changes were made in the City team to visit Aberdare, and only Bailey, Charlton, and Batten retained their positions, Murray, Gilchrist, and Shelton retained their membership but in different field positions, while for various reasons Coleburne, McIntosh, Matthews, Kirk, and Gallogley were either left out or unavailable, and Pollard, Crawshaw, Flynn, Lowson, and Dockray brought in. The Aberdare side included Len Southway at centre-half.
The weather was fine but very cold, and the ground bore traces of a heavy night frost when the teams fielded at 2.20 o'clock.
A POOR GAME
The football played today was undoubtedly the poorest witnessed on the Aberdare enclosure this season. There was an occasional display of good combination, but for the most part both sides were equally guilty of throwing away several openings on account of anxiety and over-eagerness or faulty placing of the ball. Pollard and Charlton defended well, and were ably assisted by Flynn and Crawshaw.
Bailey had no difficult work to perform. Shelton and Dockray, of the forwards, were the most forceful, but the inside men were clearly off form. The Aberdare defence was good, while James, Brown, and Shelton were responsible for the most dangerous attacks.
