DESCRIPTION

Albert Potter, of Pinhoe, has been associated with Exeter City for quite some time, first as an amateur then a professional, and he was introduced to the Football League side today. Lievesley has played very consistently for the Reserves all through the season, and with Matthews still unfit, he was chosen to partner Jazzo Kirk on the right wing.

George Hunter, the City's popular "skipper," made a most welcome reappearance, and a big ovation was accorded to Len Southway when Aberdare came out. Brophy beat Hunter in the coin-tossing ceremony, and Davis touched the ball off towards the St James's Road end. Aberdare Athletic, in striped yellow and black jerseys and white knickers, looked a very smart and sturdy lot of players, although none was especially tall, apart from Southway and Duckworth. They made ground alternately through James and Young, but Bailey had no shot to stop due to the keen tackling of Pollard and Charlton. Davis, receiving the ball in midfield, attempted to open up the game with long, sweeping passes to his wingers, and the Aberdare citadel was endangered with a beautiful low centre from Lievesley passed across the goalmouth, Worrall hooking the ball away just in time. The City team was immensely strengthened by the return to duty of Hunter, who was soon doing two men's work with his usual gusto and enthusiasm. McIntosh retired temporarily with a damaged foot, but quickly returned to the fray. A big drive by Kirk was assisted over the crossbar by one of the 'Darians, and from the ensuing corner kick a scramble developed in the goalmouth, which was eventually cleared of players when Duckworth seized the ball and punted it up the field to the half-way line.

A free kick from the half-way line enabled Kirk to go through on his own but he lost control of the ball and Duckworth picked up. He was hustled by two of the Grecian forwards, and compelled to drop the ball over the goal-line, the referee awarding Exeter a corner. Lievesley took the flag-kick and Hunter headed goalwards. The ball was finger-tipped away by Duckworth, but headed back again, and at the same time the goalkeeper was charged into the net by three City forwards. The ball crossed the line, and the referee awarded a goal to Exeter, the score being credited to Davis. In the second half Exeter had McIntosh at outside-left, Shelton inside, and Gilchrist centre-half. Twenty minutes from the end Exeter lost their lead. The leather was swung into the middle by Young, and Charlton, in attempting to head it away, sliced it across the goalmouth to James. Bailey had left his charge to try to reach Charlton's header, and James coolly placed the ball into the unguarded goal.

DESCRIPTION

The opening exchanges were uneventful, and the experiment of the switching by Weymouth of Spear to centre-forward was not much of a success. The City defence was expertly marshalled by Crompton, and Weymouth were seldom dangerous. Dockray came the closest to a goal with a terrific right-footed shot which went over the bar. In the last minute. the game the Exeter goal was attacked by a crowd of Weymouth players, but Pavey fisted the ball away.
