Saturday, March 31st,
at St James's Park.

Following on their heavy reverse at Home Park yesterday, the Grecians were at home this afternoon to Luton Town, who lost by a solitary goal at Gillingham yesterday. Exeter had Flynn at left back in place of Ackroyd, injured, while Alan Mathieson, the old Luton Town player, stood down to enable Coopland to come into the forward line at inside left.

Henderson, Luton's new outside right from The Arsenal, was hurt at Gillingham yesterday, and his place was filled by the eighteen years old Reid, a local player. Graham, who has been in the first team since Lennon was transferred to Stoke, is also in his teens, and Hoten, inside-left, is the former Portsmouth player.

Last Season: City O Luton 1.

Luton, after their tiring journey to Exeter, were still much the livelier side, and beat the Grecians by the odd goal in three.

The "Strawplaiters" opened well, and Hoten was conspicuous in opening up the game to his side's advantage. The excellent passing of the visitors was in strong contrast to the generally haphazard work of Exeter, and for long periods Luton threatened danger. Reid ended one grand move with a rasping shot that Pavey was lucky to clear, and a free-kick from the young centre forward also caused Pavey a spot of bother.

The City improved later, and despite ragged passing managed an equal share of the attacking work. Matthews, after getting the ball away from Graham, hit the upright with a swift oblique drive, and Davis missed a fine chance right in front of goal after Dockray had cut out the opening. At the other end Roe wasted a good chance by lifting the ball over the bar from five yards' range.

Second Half.

The City attacked on the resumption, but a foul against Reid a yard outside the penalty line led to the downfall of their citadel. The free-kick went wide, but had to be re-taken as Coopland stood too near the ball. The second shot was straighter, and was stopped on the goal-line by Pollard with his knee. The ball rebounded to Hoar, who scored with a fine drive into the bottom corner of the goal. It was all Luton for a while, but from a penalty for hands Crockford equalised. Tirrell was the man who handled the ball.

Clever approach work by Hoar gave Jennings a fine chance for a header, but he sent the ball over the bar. Crockford and Dockray beat everybody by fine combined play, but the final shot, a bumpy header from Crockford, was tipped over by Gibbon.

Five minutes from time, for a foul on Butcher, Luton were given a free-kick about three yards outside the penalty area, Tirrell driving the ball into the bottom of the net through a forest of players' legs, to give his side the victory.
