QUEEN'S PARK RANGERS 2
EXETER CITY 0
Last season:
Q.P.Rangers 2 Exeter City 1.
In the hope of reaping something like success, with very little having come their way lately, Exeter City made some interesting experiments in the construction of their team. Coopland dropped out from the right half position and Pollard moved up, with Southway in the place that Pollard usually occupies. In the attack Davis and Crockford exchanged places.
Exeter were, however, against formidable odds, it being noted. that the Rangers' inside trio, A.G.Davis, Parker, and Birch, have scored no fewer than 33 goals between them this season in Southern Section football.
There were six thousand spectators present when Exeter, having lost the toss, kicked off with the wind at their backs but facing
Teams :
RANGERS:- Hill; Marsden and Bain; Chandler, Vigrass, and Gregory; Butler, A.G.Davis, Parker, Birch, and Edgley.
CITY: Pavey; Southway and Flynn;
Pollard, Mitton, and Crompton; Matthews, Kirk, J.A.Davis, Crockford, and Dockray.
REFEREE: Mr E.E.Small, of Bristol.
Queen's Park Rangers gained a well merited victory against the City in the return Third Division match at Shepherd's Bush today, but the all-important goal did not materialise until a quarter of an hour from the end, when Parker scored from a perfectly placed free kick taken by Chandler.
This the Rangers' leader quickly increased with a second goal, the ball cannoning off Flynn to Parker's foot from a hard drive by Vigrass.
It was an interesting game, with the Rangers always the better side. The light ball on the hard ground was, however an obstacle which took some time to overcome, and the early play saw the ball much too often in the air.
The Rangers were the aggressors for the greater part of the opening half, but Pavey and his backs were at all times very sound.
The City's best football was played during the second half, but too much reliance was placed on Dockray, and Matthews, although frequently unmarked, saw little of the ball. Pollard failed to impress as a half-back, his tackling being weak, while he mostly neglected to feed his forwards.
CITY RESERVES v EAST DEVON LEAGUE.
The spectators at St James's Park today had two matches for the price of one. Following the East Devon Cup Final, in which Exeter Argyle beat St James's by three goals to one, Exeter City Reserves, having an open date, entertained a team picked from clubs in the East Devon League.
The players in the cup final included Percy Newberry, who has appeared once or twice for the City Reserves (Exeter Argyle), and Alf Green, the former Exeter City professional, who was at centre forward for St James's, and who scored their goal.
The players in the second match were:-
CITY RESERVES
Fryer
Ackroyd Wilson
Coopland Duke Clarke
Newman Camble Parsons Mathieson Shelton
EAST DEVON LEAGUE
Morrish (Newton Town)
Lowton (Heavitree United)
Lovell (Topsham 8t Margaret's)
Symes (Heavitree United)
Arscott (Heavitree United)
Smith (Royal Horse Artillery)
Hunt (Bovey)
Ousley (Heavitree United)
Tamblyn (University College)
A.N.Other
Pyatt (St Luke's)
Referee:- Mr H.F.Ford.
The game opened with Mathieson sending in a hefty shot, which was saved well by Morrish. The amateurs took the lead after twenty minutes with a pretty combined movement, Tamblyn netting at close range. Mathieson brought into effect some of his dazzling footwork but found a rival in Symes, who cleverly dodged the International by feinting to the left and then going right. At length the City scored, Mathieson receiving from Shelton and dribbling past the whole defence, including the goalkeeper. Camble and Parsons scored in the second half,
The Reserves winning by 3 goals to one.
Stanley Spooner Cup Final
Wednesday, April 25th,
at Home Park, Plymouth.
BRIGHT FOOTBALL
ARGYLE KEEP THE CUP
ARGYLE 3 EXETER CITY 1.
For the second consecutive season Plymouth Argyle have beaten Exeter City for the Stanley Spooner Memorial Cup and medals. The teams met for the honour at Home Park on Wednesday evening, and a bright game resulted in spite of the rain.
ARGYLE:- Craig; Cosgrove, and Devine;
Dickenson, Logan, and Eastwood; Corcoran, Jack, Fowler, Leslie, and Little.
CITY
Pavey; Pollard, and Flynn;
Coopland, Duke, and Crompton; Matthews, Kirk, Crockford, Davis, and Dockray.
REFEREE: Mr Dunstan, of Plymouth.
Play in the first half was remarkably interesting, and before Jack gave the Pilgrims the lead, near the interval, each goal had several narrow escapes.
The City were the first to become aggressive, but Craig and his backs defended well. The Argyle then got into their stride, Jack, Fowler, and Leslie each making good attempts. Jack's goal was a strong header into the top of the net from a perfectly judged pass by Corcoran.
Craig Saves a Penalty.
Early in the second half the City had a great chance of getting back on terms when Devine handled the ball in the penalty area, but Crockford's shot, from the penalty mark, was brilliantly saved by Craig. The goalkeeper later made another great save from Davis. The second and third Argyle goals were scored by Corcoran and Fowler. Considering the unpleasant conditions the football was of a very good quality, and the Argyle well deserved their success.
