DESCRIPTION
Southend United's team at Exeter this afternoon included their two recent captures, Jewhurst, from Charlton Athletic, and Watkins, from Birmingham, together with the ever popular Billy Goodwin, the ex-Grecian, considered by many knowledgable people the best centre forward ever to have played for Exeter City. Today, however, he was on the left-wing with the new centre-forward in the middle. Edwards won the toss, and Flynn set the ball rolling from the Duke's bank end.
Southend has the best of the opening exchanges, Johnson putting in some nice touches on the right wing. Flynn then got going with a fine run which gave the Southend backs some trouble, but the ball was eventually cleared by Evans.
A good move down the left flank by Billy Goodwin and Dobson was spoilt through Watkins's inability to get past Crompton, and in a further raid Johnson lost an excellent opening by centre ing behind the goal-line. Some aimless football followed, with Exeter keeping the ball too much in the air, but at last, seven minutes from the interval, the scoring account was opened, and the four thousand or so spectators were able to make use of their vocal chords. Dockray got away on the City left, and with the "Shrimpers" vainly asking for offside, the evergreen Carlisle man dribbled the ball close, finishing with a smart low pass across the goalmouth. The leather went unerringly to Lievesley, who netted, Maidment being given no chance with the swift low shot. The Grecians deserved their lead, if only for the better quality of their defensive play, but the visitors had a useful attack, well led by the hefty Watkins, and it was obvious that Exeter would have to be on their mettle in the second period.
Half-time: Exeter City 1 Southend nil.
Second Half.
When play was resumed it was seen that Goodwin and Watkins had exchanged positions. Southend's initial rush was stopped, and Kirk made a lot of ground with a long dribble from midfield, but in the end his pass across the goalmouth lacked accuracy, and Maidment gathered the ball.
A brilliant run by Dockray again imperilled the Southend goal, and some exciting play ended in Maidment saving from Coleburne on the goal-line. The second half was eighteen minutes old when the City increased their lead through a penalty, taken by Charlton. The penalty was incurred by Hodge, who handled to prevent the ball reaching Lievesley, and there was a great burst of cheering when Charlton found the net with a hard shot.

DESCRIPTION
There was the smallest "gate" for the season to see this game, several thousand Swindonians having gone to Selhurst to watch the cup-tie. Both goalkeepers distinguished themselves in the opening half, Nash saving from Batten and Pavey from Thompson.
Midway through the second half Shelton converted a penalty kick after Gallogley had been unfairly brought down, and in the ensuing five minutes Batten increased the lead. Bentley in the closing few minutes scored from a penalty kick, Pavey getting his hand to the ball but failing to halt its progress to the net.
