Southern League
Swansea Reserves (h)
Swansea Town 1-0 ECFC
Attendance: 10000
Saturday, March 22nd.
Played at the Vetch Field.
Exeter City visited Swansea today for their return League match against the Swans, who have dropped behind in the promotion race, after having led the table for most of the season. Drastic changes were made by the Welsh side, Collins, Morley, and Spottiswood all being dropped. Willie Davies, the Welsh International, returned to the outside-right position, and Holland played for the Reserves at St James's Park, Exeter.
Swansea Town 1 Exeter City 0.
Exeter's best player at the Vetch Field was Charlton, for his unyielding defensive tactics and powerful kicking saved his side time and again when all seemed lost. The City were under pressure from a revitalized Swansea team for long periods of the game, and had it not been for Charlton the score would have mounted. At last Swansea, who had attacked monotonously without sucess for the whole of the opening half, succeeded in getting the ball into the Exeter net. A free kick against Bailey for handling outside the penalty area, was taken by Roulson. He tipped the ball sideways to Howarth, who scored with a fast gounder out of Bailey's reach.
Exeter claimed a goal in the last ten minutes when a long drive by Shelton appeared to go into the Swansea net. It was kicked out quickly, and to the Grecians' consternation the referee allowed the play to proceed. At the other end Pollard nearly put through his own goal when clearing a shot from Fowler.
