CHARLTON ATHLETIC v EXETER CITY

Following recent failures, both sides made alterations, the se being mostly among the forwards. Charlton restored Goodman to his proper position at centre-forward, with F.Trayler, the amateur, moving to inside-left, and Groves and Steele on the right wing. Then at the last minute they changed their minds again, Goodman being eventually played at centre half, with Thomson coming in at centre-forward. Armitage was dropped. Exeter, who were captained by Stanley Charlton, had Crawshaw at right half for Coleburne, Kirk at inside right, Davis at centre forward, and Murray at inside-left, Appleyard being omitted.

Charlton Athletic have returned to the old ground at the Valley after a short period last season at the Catford Southend ground. There were six thousand spectators at today's match, which started in showery weather at 3.30 o'clock.

A very fine goal scored ten minutes before the interval gave the Athletic two very valuable points from their game against the Grecians, at the Valley this afternoon.
The Londoners had to play very hard to achieve this success, which was none the less well merited. Considering the pressure exercised by Charlton Athletic in this game it is to the credit of the City's defence that only one goal was conceded. It was from a defensive point of view only, however, that the City excelled, the front line, despite the alterations, making a very poor show. The extreme wingers, Matthews and Compton, are both very fine players, and lose no time in making headway, but all their good work was

literally thrown away through the ineptitude of the inside trio, who were positive failures in front of goal. The veteran Crompton was the star of the City side, doing his work in that quiet style of his and scarcely ever wasting a ball, or mis-timing a tackle. Charlton and Pollard were forced to be purely defensive through the weaknesses at inside forward and wing half, but as such, they played finely and resolutely. Bailey was safe, as always.

Charlton's goal was scored by Smith with as brilliant a cross shot as has ever been witnessed on the ground, and the ball went into the net at such a speed that it is probable that Bailey never saw it.

It was particularly unfortunate for the Exeter City club that wet weather should spoil the "gate" for such an attractive match as that of today, with Cardiff City Reserves on view. The match was doubly interesting by reason of the inclusion in the City side of Tommy Smelt, brother of the famous Burnley full-back, who signed forms for Exeter City yesterday morning. Smelt's play as leader of the Accrington Stanley attack in the past two seasons has brought him into prominence, and it is hoped that when he settles down he will be a very valuable addition to Exeter's attacking force.

City Reserves: Pavey; Flynn, Lowton; Pullan, Hampson, and Jones; Newman, Blackmore, Smelt, Shelton, and Lendon.

Cardiff Reserves: - Hill; Thomas, McLean; Lewis, Whitcombe, and Sloan; Collins, Nicholls, Beadles, Nock, and Taylor.

Referee: Mr R.A.Bowden.

Great excitement prevailed at St James's Park, where ten goals were scored, but unfortunately only four by the City Reserves. An account of the goals is given: -
Shelton, a cross-shot to the top corner of the net, Nock, following a scramble in the Exeter goalmouth, Blackmore, off the underside of the crossbar, Beadles, a smart header from Taylor's centre. Half-time 2 - 2. Nicholls, followed up an attack by Beadles and Taylor, Beadles, a header into an empty net after Pavey had run out, Shelton, a penalty kick, he having been fouled by Lewis, Nicholls, a "pile-driver" from Taylor's centre, Shelton, a penalty kick for a foul on Smelt, Collins, a solo dribble round the City backs and goalkeeper.

Result
City Reserves 4-6 Cardiff City Reserves
