City v Northampton
Last Wednesday's Football League game at St James's Park escaped a deluge by three hours or so, and today, with Northampton Town as the visitors to the City ground, and Exeter was again in luck, as regards the weather, for an anti-cyclone brought along a measure of first-quality sunshine. Fresh from their great five-nil trouncing of Bristol Rovers, a previously unbeaten side, the Cobblers hoped to open their "away" scoring account today, even though Cook, the regular inside right, was unable to play owing to strained muscles, and Bob Hewison, the veteran player-manager, stepped into the vacant position.

Northampton.
There were 7,000 spectators present in time to see the start. Lockett beat Charlton in the toss, and the Grecians played from the big bank end, facing brilliant sunshine.
Northampton divided the points with the City in a goal - less game. Exeter, despite the disadvantage of the conditions in the first half, pressed hotly through the speed and initiative of the two wingers, Matthews and Compton, but Kirk had no luck with his shooting. Following a clever run by Pease, in which a corner was won, the City goal had a remarkable escape. Pease took the flag-kick, and Bailey completely missed the ball as it flashed across the goal mouth. Luckily for Exeter, the Northampton forwards were not in a position to benefit by the slip, and Pullan kicked clear. At the other end Matthews had the Northampton defence on tenterhooks on practically every occasion that he received the ball, and Brett was fortunate aside a hot shot from Kirk, from Matthews's pass. Most of the attacking was done by Exeter, and apart from the occasional sorties of Pease, who was to Northampton what Matthews was to the City, but the play of the forwards became uneven, Watson was usually the master of the situation in the exchange s with Murray and Compton. and Lockett brought peril to the Exeter goal with a solo effort up the centre of the field, but having lured Bailey out of his goal, the Cobblers' skipper somehow steered the ball wide of the gaping net. There was a depressing lack of form in Exeter's play after the interval, neither did the visitors show anything better, thus the game became scrappy. Lockett worked out one good opening, putting Hewison through just inside the penalty area, but the ball was at the last minute taken off Hewison's feet by Charlton. Hewison, in a later attack, fired rather aimlessly over the bar. Exeter were far below their form of Wednesday evening, and even the defence was unreliable, particularly Pollard, while Bailey was lucky once or twice not to have to retrieve the ball from the net.
EBBW VALE v CITY RESERVES.
Southern League.
The Reserves had to travel to Wales without Potter and Jones, these two having been kept behind in the event of Crompton failing to report his damaged ankle fully fit, in which case of course one or the other would have had to play for the first eleven. In face of these difficulties Exeter City surprised the natives at the Vale, and pulled off a splendid victory by four goals to three.
Jimmy Rigby accompanied the team as "guide, philosopher, and friend," and he must have been delighted with the City's display. The Exeter scoring account was opened by Blackmore, then Shelton got two goals, and Blackmore wound up the tally with another. One of Shelton's, and both of Blackmore's, were scored with full blooded drives from outside the penalty area. Blackmore played his best game for Exeter so far, and though he shot often he never wasted a ball, and the Vale goalkeeper had plenty to worry about. Marlow scored a "hat-trick" for Ebbw Vale, and it is noteworthy that seventeen goals have been scored in the City Reserves' last two games.
