Watford v City

Exeter City, for the third time this year, journeyed to Watford, and hoped to fair better than on either of their previous visits. Several changes had been made from the side which drew last week against Northampton, Flynn, Potter, and Shelton coming in to the exclusion of Pollard, Kirk, and Murray.
Leaving St David's at ten o'clock this morning, the City party, in the charge of Mr F.Parkhouse and the manager Mr F.Mavin reached Watford at 2.30 p.m. The weather was pleasant, and the ground was looking nice and trim. The "Hornets" had out all their "heavy artillery,"the three inside positions all being occupied by centre forwards. Bell led the line, and Poole, who scored the goal which knocked Exeter out of the Cup last season, was inside-left, Fred Pagnam, the skipper, inside-right. Charlton won the toss.

Exeter City:

Watford played splendidly in their home match with Exeter City, and won by three goals to nothing. The game during the first half hour was scrappy, but then improved. Williams saved a shot which was smartly headed in by Davis, and this incident was followed by several fine runs and centres by Matthews, which, however, were not taken advantage of. Pagnam from outside the penalty area fired in a powerful drive which Bailey saved immaculately.

Pagnam scored for Watford after 34 minutes. Bailey had just been forced to make three saves in rapid succession, and the last one
left him sprawling in the goal-mouth. There was a tangle of other players in the penalty area, and Pagnam seized his chance, the ball going between Charlton's legs with Bailey powerless.
Then Davis scored for Exeter, but as Gregory had been fouled the goal was disallowed, and a free-kick to Watford given. Watford just about deserved their one goal lead at the interval, but no more, for their attacks were repeatedly broken down by the veteran Crompton, who is playing better than ever this season. Early in the second half Crompton struck the Watford crossbar with a rasping drive, and Williams saved from Compton, but the City attacks faded away, and the brilliant passing of the Watford half backs and forwards gave the City defence a lot of trouble, and kept the play flowing towards the Exeter goal.

FLYNN SCORES FOR WATFORD.

After eleven minutes of the second half had been played a soft goal was scored by Watford. Andrews lobbed the ball into the City penalty area, and Flynn, in trying to clear, headed it just under the bar and into the Exeter net. Charlton was kicked in the stomach, and he was being attended to behind the goal when Carter drove the ball into the top corner of Exeter's goal, and Watford were three up. In the last quarter of an hour Andrews struck the Exeter crossbar, and Williams saved from Matthews.
