Newport v City
Exeter City travelled to Newport for today's encounter with the "Ironsides" with yet another experimental team, changes having been made in the three inside forward positions, and the players chosen being each one a centre-forward, officially. Lievesley was originally chosen to lead the attack, but he has an ankle injury, and the job was given to Appleyard, with Smelt and Davis at either side of him. At left half Jones was preferred to Potter.

Exeter City:
Charlton won the toss for the City and the crowd of 7,000 was treated to a lively opening. Davis followed up the initial attack and shot strongly, but the ball was cleared. Clever football kept Exeter on the offensive, and Pullan just missed scoring with a hard drive over the crossbar following combined play on the left wing. With Charlton in great form for the City, the Newport forwards were being held as if in a vice, and when they did get away on the left Cook's centre was punched out by Bailey and cleared. It was, however, the prelude to a more dangerous attack which, thanks to the efforts of Pollard and Bailey and the wild shooting of Lowes, petered out unsuccessfully. Another fine shot by Pullan at the Newport end was diverted over the bar by Maidment, but the corner was unproductive. The dry state of the ground was responsible for the game being very fast, and Newport came away from the centre a rush, but Gittens, put through by W.Charlton, could only make a weak shot straight at Bailey, who saved with ease. Then the City went right through to the other end, and Appleyard hooked the ball just wide of the posts. Nairm was admonished by the referee for a foul on Davis, and following the free kick a hot shot by Smelt was saved by Maidment. A halt was called when the referee had occasion to go over to the popular side and speak to spectators, who had been barracking the Exeter players. Over-eagerness by both sides tended to spoil the game, and good football was seen only in patches. Exeter took the lead after 25 minutes. Pullan put forward to Appleyard, who in turn placed the ball between the backs. Davis was on to it like a flash, beating Maidment with a well directed shot into the bottom corner of the net. Newport had a chance of equalising, but from five yards range Gittens drove the ball over the bar. Crompton was fouled as he was dribbling through, but the free kick was cleared.
At half-time the score was:
Newport County 0 Exeter City 1.
SECOND HALF.
A brilliant attack by Exeter just after the restart compelled Maidment to fist over the bar a shot from Davis, but instead of a corner the referee awarded a goal kick to Newport. In a lively Newport move Cook centred to the goalmouth, Bailey winning applause for a terrific punch which sent the ball over the touch-line, and Cook, who was easily the most effective of the home forwards next struck the foot of the goalpost. Compton led an Exeter raid down the left wing, but his centre was kicked clear by McKenzie, then from a free kick for a foul on Cook the ball was driven through to the goalmouth by Carney, but again Bailey saved. Play veered from end to end at amazing speed, and Appleyard and Davis each saw their powerful drives kept out by Maidment, and a. further attack by the Grecians was halted by Dimmock bringing down Matthews just outside the penalty area, but instead of giving the City a free kick the referee threw the ball down.
THE EQUALISING GOAL.
The teams were well matched with Exeter perhaps just a shade more effective, all round. In a lightning City move the Newport defence was on the run, and a rasping drive from Smelt was saved under the crossbar by Maidment. Midway through the second half the equalising goal was scored. An overhead lob took the ball past the Exeter backs, and Bailey ran out, but Gittens kept the leather at his toes and ran with it into the net. This goal set the crowd on tip-toe, and it was evident that the match would be fiercely con tested till the end. A long cross-shot from Newport's Charlton was kept out by Bailey, and a ground pass from the same Charlton ought to have been converted by Lowes, but the inside left overran the ball almost on the goal-line.
Three minutes before the end Lowes eluded Exeter's Charlton and shot the ball past Bailey to score the winning goal. In the last couple of minutes Exeter pressed the Newport defence very hard but were unable to score.
NOTES ON THE GAME.
The Grecians fought hard and were unlucky to lose. Bailey made many fine saves, but was at fault in allowing the first goal to be scored, as he had every chance of running out and smothering the ball. The closing minutes were packed with excitement, and the City came near to drawing level again.
Southern League
Reserves
CITY v NEWPORT
Exeter City Reserves had to make an eleventh hour change, as Appleyard had to go to Newport with the "Chiefs," and Murray took the inside left position. The weather was ideal when the teams entered the field, and the attendance was about 2,000.
City Reserves: - Pavey; Coleburne, Flynn; Crawshaw, Potter, Smith; Newman, Kirk, Blackmore, Murray, and Shelton.
County Reserves: - Murray; T.White, McKen zie; Sanderson, Elwell, Roberts; Wardell, Turnbull, Taylor, H.White, and Hiles.
Flynn won the toss and the City played from the St James's Road end with the sun behind them. Neat combination between Blackmore, Murray, and Shelton promised well, but the danger was cleared when Shelton's centre was missed by Blackmore. Exeter went ahead after twelve minutes' play through Blackmore, who drove beautifully into the net from Kirk's pass. The City kept up their attacks practically without cessation, but the next goal did not arrive until a minute before half-time, when Blackmore shot through after receiving from Murray. Midway through the second half Blackmore gained possession, and after beating the County defence went on to score with a low drive which gave the goalkeeper no chance. Taylor scored for Newport in the last minute of the game.
Result: City 3 Newport 1.
