Match 14
1st November 1924
Aberdare Athletic (a)
Southern League.
Aberaman (h)
Aberdare Athletic 3-1 ECFC
Scorers: Blackmore
Attendance: 2500
Exeter City experienced a slice of misfortune in connection with their match at Aberdare, for Pullan, whose consistently fine form at half-back has made him so popular, was taken ill, and his place given to Billy Crawshaw. Blackmore was persevered with, in the hope of maintaining a more thrustful attack. The Grecians left St David's Station this morning, and arrived at their destination just in time for the kick-off.

Exeter City:
The large ground at Aberdare, under heavy rain and with only a mere handful of spectators present, looked a very depressing sight at 3.15 o'clock when the players came out. The playing pitch was almost under water in places, and the turf absolutely sodden. The game opened at a fast pace, however, considering the state of the ground, and both defences were extended. After fifteen minutes Aberdare were awarded a penalty for hands, and Probert, who was entrusted with the kick, beat Bailey with a well directed shot, low, into the corner of the goal. Aberdare continued to be the more aggressive side, but the City defence was in fine fettle, and time and again Bailey and his backs cleared magnificently. The City forwards at length got going, and their combination on the wet ground often reached a high standard. Shortly before the interval Blackmore obtained a fine goal from a
pass by Kirk which split the defence, and at half time the score was Aberdare 1 Exeter City 1.
The game continued in the second half at a pace which was quite surprising considering the state of the ground, and it was indeed atribute to the fitness of the players. Both sides attacked with great vigour, and made strenuous efforts to gain the lead.
Ten minutes after the restart Aberdare went ahead through a goal by Burgess, following heavy pressure, and with the Grecians failing to maintain their earlier promise the issue was settled beyond all doubt ten minutes from the close, by Burgess. The ball was centred accurately by James, and Burgess beat Bailey with a hard shot into the top of the net from ten yards range from a
pass by Kirk which split the defence, and at half time the score was Aberdare 1 Exeter City 1.

For the remainder of the game Exeter played up pluckily, being unable nevertheless to make any impression on a strong defence.
CITY RESERVES V ABERAMAN. Southern League.
The playing pitch at St James's Park was in a sodden state this afternoon, it having rained for most of the week, and the players had small prospect of keeping any part of themselves dry for long. Pavey having injured his hand, the home goal was guarded by George Le theren, of Topsham St Margaret's. There was a very small crowd in attendance, due to the weather, and only the grandstand and the covered enclosure was occupied, the big bank at the far end being completely deserted.
City Reserves:- Letheren; Coleburne, Flynn; Murray, Potter, Smith; Newman, Appleyard, Lievesley, Shelton, and Lendon.
Aberaman: Thomson ; James, Hickie; Edwards, Cowan, Waddell; - Fallow, Brown, Aird, Drinnan, and McGoldrick.
Referee: Mr J.J.Hughes.
Flynn won the toss and elected to play from the Exeter end. The City attacked from the outset, and Potter, Lievesley, and Lendon all had shots saved by Thomson in the first three minutes. Exeter completely outplayed their opponents, mainly through the strength of their half-back line, and play remained constantly in Aberaman's territory. In an isolated raid Letheren earned applause when he rushed out of his goal to dispossess Brown, and from his clearance Appleyard went straight through and scored for Exeter. With the atmosphere dark and rain falling steadily the interval was dispensed with. The players were covered in mud from head to foot, and quite unrecognisable. Play continued in the Aberaman half of the field, and twelve minutes from time Lievesley scored for the City, making the result:
City Reserves 2 Aberaman nil.
