Match 15
8th November 1924
Norwich City (h)
Southern League
Torquay United Reserves (a)
ECFC 1-0 Norwich County
Scorers: Matthews (pen)
Attendance: 6000
Ideal conditions favoured Exeter City's Football League match with Norwich City today at St James's Park. The pitch had nicely dried out following its recent soakings and swampings. The match last Saturday between the City Reserves and Aberaman could only be described as a "mudbath," and the pitch had been churned up to such a degree that the game between the Grecians and Torquay United, for the Devon Professional Championship, which should have been played at St James's Park on Wednesday, had to be postponed till later in the season.
This afternoon the sky was cloudless, a thin November mist was like a veil over the sun, and there was a seasonal nip in the air. Norwich City, who won sensationally at Exeter last season, are in good form in the present campaign, despite the fact that they are now without Austin, who has joined Manchester City.

Charlton won the toss and set Norwich to face the sunshine, Jackson kicking off towards St James's Road. The first move, by the "Canaries," resulted in them gaining a corner, but no more. Straight from the clearance of the flag-kick the Exeter forwards carried play smartly to the Norwich end, where Kirk got the backs in a tangle by nursing the ball almost on the back line. It then came out to Matthews, who was fouled, and Mr Russell, right on the spot, awarded the City a penalty. Matthews took the spot-kick and beat Dennington with a shot which shook the rigging, and Exeter were a goal to the good with only one minute of the game played. Norwich showed up well for a few minutes, trying hard to force an opening, but Pollard and Charlton were in fine fettle, and put up a stonewall resistance. Kirk then spoiled his chance of getting a goal by handling the ball, and Norwich gained a second free kick when Jackson was charged over by Crompton. The ball was very light, which was quite an unusual state of affairs this season, and the players found difficulty in getting it under control. The City forwards collaborated in a nice round of combination passing, however, and Davis finished off the move by shooting fiercely, but too high. Blackmore won applause with a fine shot, the ball passing over the angle of the goal. Pollard, in possession and finding that no-one was coming to tackle him, dribbled right through to the penalty area and shot for goal, but Dennington in saving made goalkeeping look easy.
SECOND HALF
Norwich started the second half with a determined raid on their right, but Pollard cleared the danger, and when Exeter returned the compliment a wild shot by Matthews landed the ball in St. James's Road, or possibly Oxford Road even. Blackmore had two shots saved by Dennington. It continued to be a very fine game, between two strong and well matched sides, and although no further goals were scored the City's marksmanship was always dangerous. Martin was the inspiration of the Norwich team, his clever passes to the forwards deserving a better reward, but whenever Norwich attacked there was always the formidable Stanley Charlton to keep them at bay.
TORQUAY UNITED V CITY RESERVES.
Southern League
The Southern League match at Plainmoor was of special interest, as Gartrell, who was Torquay's original goalkeeper, returned to the Magpies team for the first time this season. Also for the first time the price of admission to the popular side was reduced.
Torquay United:- Gartrell; Rice, Drew; Brown, Miller, and Leslie;
Kirkpatrick, Kellock, Bell, Breen, and Pearson.
City Reserves: - Pavey; Coleburne, and Flynn; Crawshaw, Potter, and Smith; Newman, Appleyard, Lievesley, Murray, and Shelton.
Referee:- Mr H.F.Curtis, of Plymouth.
Early in the second half Pavey accidentally turned a centre from Kirkpatrick into his own net, but Appleyard equalised.
