Southern League
Llanelly (h)
Brentford 2-5 ECFC
Scorers:
Matthews Pullan Blackmore 2, Compton
Attendance: 2500
For the visit of Exeter City to Griffin Park the directorate of Brentford made several team changes, Alton and Broadbent taking up the defensive positions on the right flank, and alterations were also made in the forward line. Appleyard appeared for Exeter vice Davis, who has an injured foot. The weather was dull, with a cold snap in the air. A very small crowd of spectators was present, not exceeding 2,500.

Exeter City:
The City kicked off, and were the first to get away, Gilbert having to save a shot from Kirk, another from Matthews, and rather a weak header from Appleyard, all in the first two minutes.
Still attacking, the City nearly took the lead when Kirk fired in a terrific drive from fifteen yards, but Gilbert saved this as well. Up to this point the "Bees" had not been seen, and the City were in sparkling form. At length Brentford got down to the Exeter end, and Bailey saved from Garnish. Compton was then prominent on Exeter's left. He put across a centre which looked to be altogether too fast for his colleagues, but Matthews came storming in to meet the ball forcefully with his head, and the astonished goalkeeper was left with the formality of retrieving the ball from the back of the net. This happened in the ninth minute of the game. Brentford recovered themselves slightly, and forced two corners, both saved by Bailey and cleared. At the other end Appleyard thrilled the onlookers with a brilliant dash through the centre of the field, holding off all opposition until challenged by Kell, when he calmly passed to Blackmore, but the Silverton amateur shot high over the bar. Thus did a glorious opportunity get wasted, and it was due to a blunder by Blackmore that Brentford equalised. Blackmore failed to keep possession of the ball, which was quickly slipped through to Allen, who forced a corner, and from the flag kick Gamish put the ball past Bailey with a powerful header.
AN ESCAPE FOR EXETER.
This reverse rattled the City after they had enjoyed so much of the play so far, and they immediately attacked, but Kirk's fierce shot was lacking in direction and sailed well wide of the posts. Then a long kick by Kell tempted Bailey from his goal, which was trapped by Charlton, but the City skipper allowed Garnish to gain possession, right in front of goal. But instead of tapping the ball into Exeter's empty net the Brentford forward sent it goalmouth and out of play. It was a very lucky escape for the City, across the and a most uncharacteristic error by Charlton, who is not renowned for making defensive errors. At the half time interval the scores were level, Brentford 1 Exeter City 1.
SECOND HALF.
On resuming Brentford at once began to force the pace, having regained confidence by their first-half success. Early on a corner was forced, but Pollard made a grand clearance with two or three Brentford forwards hemming him in. At this stage Brentford lost the services of Alton, who was taken off with a knee injury. Compton then raised the hopes of Exeter with a fine burst along the touch-line. His pace was too great for the home defence, and he looked all over a scorer as he bored inwards, but instead of trying a shot he gave to Blackmore, who was too slow and was charged off the ball. Kirk forced a corner on the right, which was cleared. Another great run by Compton saw the ball go to Matthews, who transferred to Pullan, but the ball was sent weakly over the goal line, wide of the posts.
BRENTFORD MISS AND EXETER SCORE.
A free-kick to Brentford was placed nicely to Parker, who was, owing to the carelessness of Pollard and Charlton, left unmarked and with an open goal to shoot at, but he effected the most glaring miss of the match, and directed the ball wide. Away to the other end went the City, Pullan snapping up the ball and going through to score a
"picture" goal after seventeen minutes. Having tasted blood again the City forwards went at it hammer and tongs, Kirk being a great raider. Five minutes after the scoring of Pullan's goal Kirk was turning to receive a pass from Matthews when he was charged in the back by Williams, and laid out. Although Brentford Cleared the free-kick Kirk was soon up again, and after another of his magnificent bursts swung the ball across for Blackmore to find the net with a fierce left-footed shot.
CITY TAKE UP THE OFFENSIVE.
Brentford now made many efforts, all of which broke down before a rock-like defence, Pollard and Charlton having apparently fully recovered from their earlier aberrations. Again Exeter took up the offensive, and they certainly did play in great style now. Appleyard struck the upright with a force that knocked clouds of whitewash off it, and a bewildering dribble by Matthews tangled up the Brentford defence, a corner resulting. In his eagerness to score a second goal Pullan fired wildly over the bar from Matthews's flag kick, and at this stage of the game the Grecians were literally "wiping the floor" with Brentford. Blackmore scored a spectacular fourth goal, and this was quickly followed by the fifth from Compton. In the closing few minutes the light was rapidly deteriorating, and the last goal of the match, by Parker for Brentford, could not be seen from the grandstand in the November gloom.
Southern League
CITY RESERVES v LLANELLY.
A typical Devonshire "drizzle" did not help the gate receipts at St James's Park, where Llanelly opposed the City Reserves in a Southern League match. At twenty to three, the advertised time of the kick-off, the terraces were almost empty.
Exeter: Pavey; Coleburne, Lowton; Crawshaw, Potter, and Flynn; Newman, Murray, Lievesley, Shelton, and Lendon.
Llanelly: Goldsborough; H.Woodward, Hang; T.Woodward, Hodson, and Lievesley; Perriam, Waite, Evans, Bishop, and Cartwright.
Referee:- Mr F.W.Reeve, of Devonport.
Because of the late arrival of the Llanelly team the start was delayed for a quarter of an hour. The Llanelly captain beat Flynn in the toss, but there was no advantage to be had. Splendid shots at goal were delivered by both teams in the first few minutes but nothing was scored. A miskick by Lowton gave Waite an opportunity, but Pavey dived to a fierce low shot and turned the ball round the goalpost. Lowton cleared the corner, and then at the other end of the field Lendon slipped a pass across for Shelton to take a very simple chance, but the Sheffielder drove the ball right across the face of the goal and over the back line. Llanelly had a series of hairsbreadth escapes in the next few minutes, with the Exeter forwards over-running their penalty area. Goldsborough saved twice from Flynn, and Lievesley, of Llanelly, headed out a short range header from Lievesley, of Exeter, with the goalkeeper well beaten. Goldsborough saved two more raspers from Shelton and one from the Exeter Lievesley, and nearly all these openings were being provided by Lenton's accurate centres. There was only one team in it at this stage, but the ball just refused to go into the net.
LIEVESLEY SCORES FOR EXETER.
Twenty minutes from the start Cartwright forced the ball past Coleburne and made tracks for goal, but Flynn nipped back and took possession of the leather, sweeping it up the field to Lendon, and the young winger crossed it to Newman. The ball was returned to the goalmouth, and headed into the net by Lievesley. The Llanelly goal was subjected to another heavy bombardment, with Flynn and even Lowton joining in. Five minutes before the interval Newman went up the wing like an express train and centred for Shelton to score Exeter's second goal, and another rousing move ended with a brilliant header by Murray
finishing up in the back of the net.
HALF-TIME:
CITY RESERVES 3 LLANELLY 0.
Hardly had the second half started when Shelton added to the City's harvest of goals by heading in at point-blank range, then, five minutes later the "nap-hand" was reached by Lendon, who raced through from the half-way line with the ball at his toes, and came to the end of a brilliant sprint with a flashing shot into the top. of the goal which Goldsborough could hardly have seen. At last Llanelly showed something of their real form. Perriam received from T.Woodward and passed to Waite, who wormed his way past Coleburne and scored with a cross-shot. A penalty was awarded to Exeter for a glaring foul, and from the spot-kick Shelton rattled in the Grecians' sixth goal.
The result was:
City Reserves 6 Llanelly 1,
A great cheer went up when it was announced from the "Football Express" box that the Grecian first team had won at Brentford by 5 goals to 2.
