EXETER CITY. Pavey; Pollard, Charlton; Pullan, Mc Devitt, Shelton; Matthews, Kirk, Casson, Myers, Compton.
NEWPORT COUNTY. Maidment; Wetherby, Frank McKenzie; Nairn, Fred McKenzie, Carney; Coates, Gittens, Davis, Forward, Cook.

Thanks to the opportunism of Jack Davis, who has scored eleven of his side's goals this season, Newport County are well placed in the Southern Section. For today's match their inside forwards had to be changed, as Lowes and Taylor were both injured in a match at Bournemouth during the week, and Gittens and Forward were the substitutes. Exeter City had out their usual forward line, but at left-half Shelton deputised for Potter (injured), at left - back Charlton reappeared after a month on the injured list, and in goal Pavey displaced Bailey, who has missed only one League game in the last two seasons.
The weather was fine and bright when the teams came out, and Jack Davis was given a special ovation for old times' sake on this, his first appearance at St James's Park since his transfer. Charlton won the toss, and Exeter defended the St James's Road end, with the sun at their backs.

The Exeter goal had two lucky escapes in the opening minute, one shot from Davis going just wide and another, from Gittens, hitting the crossbar. But the City took the lead through Casson in the seventh minute, Maidment being deceived by a soft shot from the Exeter centre forward. This lead was increased on the stroke of half time by Compton, who breasted the ball into the net after Matthews had beaten Frank McKenzie and centred. Newport reduced Exeter's lead after nine
minutes of the half. An appeal by Charlton for offside against Gittens failed, second and the County inside right went on to beat Pavey with a shot to the bottom left-hand corner of the goal.
Notes on the Game.
Exeter in the first half were slightly the better of two rattling good teams, and well as the County halves and forwards played the City were good value for their two-goals lead at half-time. Newport were not so well served at full-back.In the second chapter the Grecians had good reason to be thankful for the magnificent play of Pollard and Charlton. The home attack went to pieces, and except for sudden breakaways Exeter were very rarely in the picture as regards aggression. Pavey kept a good goal, Charlton's return made for more strength in defence, and the extreme wing forwards were the pick of the attack. Myers was good in the first half, but Kirk was weak all the way through. Davis, the former Grecian, was a keen, quick, and alert leader for Newport County, and would have done some damage if Exeter had not been so strong in defence.

WESTERN LEAGUE:
WEYMOUTH v CITY RESERVES

A lively and entertaining first half saw five goals scored in the Western League match at Weymouth. After Bolam had opened the City's account Weymouth forced the game, and Caswell, Culley, and Dale all scored. Five minutes before the interval Blackmore reduced the deficit.
Half-time:
Weymouth 3 City Reserves 2.

The Reserves faded in the second half, and after fifteen minutes Dale scored Weymouth's fourth goal. This was followed by a fifth from Runney following a corner well placed by Broad.
Full-time:
Weymouth 5 City Reserves 2.
Exeter Reserves: Bailey; Lowton, Hawkins; Crawshaw, Arscott, Flynn; Newman, Bolam, Blackmore, "A.N.Other," and Lievesley.

MID RHONDDA V. CITY RESERVES

Exeter City Reserves suffered their second defeat of the season in connection with the Southern League, when at Tony pandy they were beaten 1-nil by Mid-Rhondda. The point was scored ten minutes after the start, Jack Feebery, the old "Grecian" full-back being concerned in the goal. Feebery shot direct for goal from a free kick, Bailey only pushed the ball out to Lyner, and Lyner fed Castle, who scored at close quarters. The Grecians had the better of the play, but Gibbon, the home goalkeeper, was in excellent form. He kept out countless shots from Blackmore and Compton, and made a sensational save in the second half when Lievesley headed in from short range. Towards the end Mid-Rhondda rallied, and Bailey saved well from Paterson, the old Scottish International.
Result Mid Rhondda 1 City Reserves 0.
