DESCRIPTION
Exeter had to thank their defence, and most of all Pavey for the fact that they were able to take a point from Luton. The Exeter forwards were again weak, passing inaccurately as well as shooting badly. After half an hour's play Shankley scored for Luton following a corner, and a second goal seemed certain when Thompson got clean through, but Pavey cleverly saved his shot right underneath the crossbar. Early in the second half the City forced two corners, and Myers headed over the bar from the second one. Luton soon returned to the attack, however, and Pavey ran out of his goal to charge down a shot by Millar. The ball rebounded to Shankley, who, with an empty goal lobbed the shot over the bar. Then Compton was placed in possession and ran half the length of the field and got right down to the goal-line, but then blazed a fierce drive high over the bar, when with a little coolness the equalising goal might have been scored.
A pass by Blackmore to Matthews resulted in the City gaining a corner, but Graham cleared, and again the Luton forwards came into the picture through the efforts of Shankley. Pollard headed the ball to Compton, who executed a clever run and centred along the ground to Myers, who completely missed his shot. A beautiful run By Compton outwitted the home defence, and his centre was met by Blackmore with a first-time shot into the top of the net. This was after twenty-eight minutes of play. A centre from Miller put Reid in possession a yard from the line, but Pavey saved, and the end came with Luton still trying their hardest, but unsuccessfully, to regain the lead. It was an interesting game, but Exeter were decidedly lucky.

WESTERN LEAGUE:
CITY RESERVES v TAUNTON UNITED

The visit to St James's Park today of Taunton United in a match for Western League points was made especially interesting by the appearance for the Somerset club of Joe Coleburne at left half. Until this afternoon the Grecians were without a win in this competition. The attendance was 3,000.

City Reserves:- Bailey; Hawkins and Flynn; Arscott, Crompton, and Crawshaw; Newman, Bolam, Lowton, Chapman, and Lievesley.

Taunton United:- Lowe; Treasure and Bradshaw; Groves, Wilcox, and Coleburne; Randall, Walter, Clemett, Viny, and Pearson.

Bradshaw won the toss, and Taunton played from the St James's Road end in the first half with the sun behind them.
Bailey saved from Wilcox but Exeter attacked immediately, and in the first raid Lievesley centred to Lowton, whose first time shot struck the crossbar. After twenty minutes the Grecians took the lead. Crawshaw supplied Newman with a pretty pass, and the right winger coaxed the ball quickly and cleverly past two defenders and then beat Lowe with a lovely shot. Shortly before half time a Taunton defender handled a corner kick by Newman, and Lowton scored easily from the penalty spot. Exeter were much the better team in the second half, and Taunton's goal had some amazing escapes. A quarter of an hour before the finish Lowton scored another goal for Exeter, heading into the net a centre from Lievesley, and when Coleburne used his hands to stop another centre from Newman, the referee had no option but to award another penalty. Lowton scored again, thus completing his "hat-trick." In the closing minute Taunton got a smart goal, Clemett heading in a centre from Pearson.

Result:
City Reserves 4 Taunton United 1.
