Rangers v City
The City's long sequence of League and Cup successes has come to an end at last, in the fourteenth game. It is a wonderfully splendid record, excelling anything of the kind in the history of the club. Southampton people last Saturday were wondering how on earth such a list of results had been built up, but it is satisfactory to be able to report that the Grecians showed them on Wednesday. The side which fought so well on Wednesday took the field today at the Queen's Park Rangers' ground, adjacent to the White City, and the weather was ideal.
Saturday, January 17th.
QUEEN'S PARK RANGERS 1 EXETER CITY 4.
Last season: Q.P.Rangers 2 City 0.
RANGERS:
Hill
Pierce Ogley
Thompson Knowles Harris
Graham Birch Myers Moore Ford
Referee:- Mr E.Tolfree, of Southampton.
Compton Lievesley Davis Kirk Matthews
Potter Crompton Pullan
Charlton Pollard
Bailey
EXETER CITY:
Charlton beat Knowles in the toss, but there was no advantage in it, and Myers kicked off in the presence of 6,000 spectators. With the City exerting pressure for most of the first half, Kirk missed an open goal, and a minute or so later missed another one. He then atoned for all his previous mistakes, midway through the first half, by scoring a great goal. Obtaining possession in midfield Kirk put on speed and dribbled past both backs, and when Hill came out to meet him he coolly dodged round him and "walked" the ball into the net. It was a superb piece of individualism, and on the run of the play Exeter well deserved their lead. Half-time:
Rangers 0 Exeter City 1.
SECOND HALF.
The Rangers attacked on resuming, and Bailey had to be alert to gather a centre from Ford. Exeter failed to settle down, keeping the ball too close, and it came as no surprise when after eight minutes Moore equalised. The Rangers continued to enjoy the balance of the
play, and were awarded a penalty against Pollard for punching the ball out from the goalmouth after Bailey had missed Ford's centre from the touchline. The kick was taken by Knowles and brilliantly saved by Bailey.
Following a corner on Exeter's left Kirk headed over the bar, but in the next attack Compton regained the lead with a shot into the top of the net from a very acute angle. This was after twenty minutes of the second half had elapsed.
TALE OF TWO PENALTIES.
Five minutes later Pierce brought down Davis in the penalty area and from the spot kick Matthews crashed the ball into the net with a cannon-like drive that Hill had no earthly chance of stopping. Exeter's forwards were now over-running the Rangers' defence at
every step, and five minutes later a weak back-pass from Pierce to Hill was picked up by Davis, who ran in and netted the fourth goal. Then the Rangers attacked for a change, and with Bailey out of his goal Pullan fisted out a shot from Birch. Bailey again distinguished himself by saving the penalty, taken this time by Ford.
CITY RESERVES V YEOVIL
Southern League
Glorious weather favoured this afternoon's Southern League match at St James's Park between the City Reserves and Yeovil. The teams were:
CITY RESERVES: - Pavey; Coleburne, Flynn; Murray, Jones, Crawshaw;
Newman, Smelt, Appleyard, Blackmore, and Shelton.
YEOVIL: Vallis; Watts, May; Abbott, Gallon, Gregory; Gardiner, Pidgeon, Hayward, Scott, and Wilson.
Referee: Mr F.H.Wheaton, of Chard.
Gregory beat Flynn in the toss, and Appleyard kicked off facing St James's Road. With Jones a tower of strength at centre-half the City piled on the pressure in the first twenty five minutes, and the Yeovil goal bore a charmed life. Ten minutes from the interval Blackmore struck the crossbar with a hefty shot, then netted the rebound. The point was balanced three minutes later, Hayward heading through from Gardner's centre. There was no further scoring, the match ending in a draw, one goal each. The news of the City Chiefs' splendid performance at the match in London caused a big sensation amongst the delighted crowd.
