EXETER CITY v CHARLTON ATHLETIC

The City were without their captain, Stanley Charlton, who has a bruised ankle, and his place at left back was taken by Andy Flynn, the Reserves' captain, and the team captained by Ellis Crompton. The afternoon was damp and misty, and the teams took the field at 2.55 p.m. in very bad light. Exeter wore the jerseys they played in at Reading, red with a white "V" back and front.
Everybody was not a little curious as to the effect on the play of this afternoon's solar eclipse, the first seen in this country for a century and a half.

The City's unbeaten League record now extends to eleven matches, but they left things rather late this afternoon, and all the goals came in the final quarter of an hour. The opening goal, scored by Davis, was one of the most brilliant and spectacular ever seen on the ground. A nice pass from Kirk put Matthews through, and from his centre Davis threw himself head first at the flying ball, and succeeded in heading it into the net. Pollard next fed Compton in midfield with a very pretty pass, and
the outside-left careered through the middle in characteristic style and beat Preedy all ends up with a great shot. Two minutes later the lead was decreased by Charlton, for whom Turnbull converted a neat centre by Allen. The heavy mist which lay over the field was very reminiscent of the first Southampton cup tie, then at 4.30 p.m. the light improved as if by magic.
