NORTHAMPTON TOWN v. EXETER CITY

With a long run of successes to their credit the Grecians made the journey to Northampton full of confidence for their League fixture with the Cobblers at the County Ground this afternoon. In direct contrast to the conditions in the West-country, the weather was brilliant and the ground in excellent condition.

Saturday January 31st.

NORTHAMPTON TOWN 2 EXETER CITY 1.

Last season: Northampton 1 City 0.

NORTHAMPTON TOWN:
Smith
Watson Jeffs
Evans Brett Chapman
Pease Poyntz Cockle Hoten Page

EXETER CITY:
Bailey
Charlton Pollard
Potter Crompton Pullan
Compton Lievesley Davis Kirk Matthe

Exeter City's unbeaten record was broken at Northampton, where the Cobblers won an undistinguished game by two goals to one. There was a very high wind which the City had to face in the first half, and this made ball control and combined play very difficult. A penalty awarded to the Grecians was wasted, Kirk shooting well over the bar from the spot, and it is a question of wonderment why Matthews, who is deadly from the penalty spot, was not given this one to take. The interval arrived with nothing scored. In the second half the Cobblers took the lead through Poyntz, and Crompton with a fine header from Kirk's centre equalised. A penalty then came to Northampton, who followed Exeter's example, and threw fifteen minutes to go Page dashed through on his own and scored. the chance away, Cockle shooting straight at Bailey, who saved. With 15 minutes to go Page dashed through on his own and scored.

CITY RESERVES v BRIDGEND.
Exeter City Reserves and Bridgend met at St James's Park today in quest of Southern League points on a soft pitch and in a half gale of wind and rain. Despite the conditions there were 2,500 spectators. Rawlings won the toss, and Exeter started against the wind. Brisk exchanges marked the opening play, each goal being visited in turn, and George Letheren of Topsham saved well from Brittain. Another of Brittain's drives was headed out of the goalmouth by Flynn, but in the twentieth minute Exeter took the lead, Murray heading Newman's centre into the net well wide of Rapsey. Blackmore followed up with Exeter's second goal following a corner taken by Shelton.
In the second half Blackmore and Shelton scored for the Reserves, who thus won by four goals to nil.
The teams were: -
Exeter: - Letheren; Coleburne, Flynn; Crawshaw, Appleyard, and Jones; Newman, Smelt, Blackmore, Murray, and Shelton.
Bridgend:- Rapsey; Murray, Bibby; Wilson, Curtis, and Rawlings; Brittain, Smith, Hopkins, Thomas, and Turner.

Referee: Mr F.H.Wheaton, of Chard.
