SOUTHEND UNITED v EXETER CITY
The fact that both Southend United and Exeter City are well in the running for promotion meant additional interest in the contest at the Kursaal this afternoon. In the Exeter team Shelton deputised for Compton at outside-left, while Southend were at full strength, but did not include Hunter, the old Exeter City captain, who has been transferred to them from Workington.

A fast game at Southend ended in a victory for the "Shrimpers" by three clear goals. There was little to choose between the teams in the first half, and the United were a trifle fortunate to cross over with the lead of a goal scored by McClelland just before the change of ends. Both goals had several narrow escapes in the first half, Hayes being particularly lucky on one occasion to scramble away a shot by Davis. Matthews and Shelton put across many fine centres, but their inside colleagues were badly at fault with their efforts to find the net.
SECOND HALF.
In the second half the City's attack faded away, and their back line also failed badly. The Southend attack, well led by McClelland, was repeatedly in evidence, but Brooks and Bissett missed one or two simple chances in front of goal. minutes before the finish a breakaway from the half-way line by McClelland resulted in a second goal to Southend, and right on time a clever pass by O'Rawe put the home centre-forward through again to beat Bailey with a swift shot and complete his "hat-trick." Southend, on their play in the second half, were full value for their win, being sound in every department of the team. McClelland, who scored all three goals, was at the top of his form, and was well supported by O'Rawe and Dobson.
Bailey had a gruelling time, as did Pollard and Charlton, and the City were beaten through the inability of their inside forwards to take their chances, especially in the first half.
CITY RESERVES V TAUNTON UNITED
SOUTHERN LEAGUE
Good weather prevailed for today's match at St James's Park where Taunton United provided the opposition in connection with the Southern League, good, that is, as the weather goes nowadays. The occasional showers were not too heavy, and the light was satisfactory.
Reserves:
Pavey; Coleburne, Flynn ; Crawshaw, Appleyard, Jones; Newman, Smelt, Blackmore, Murray, Lendon.
Taunton: -
Lowe; Treasure, Ward; Groves, Brelsford, Bradshaw; Norman, Randall, Dale, Breen, Webber.
Referee: Mr R.A. Bowden, of Newton Abbot.
Taunton, in Cambridge blue shirts and white knickers, looked a very smart side, and their captain beat Flynn in the toss, Exeter having to face the sun, which was filtering through the clouds. Ten minutes before the interval Smelt gave Exeter the lead, and this was increased by Blackmore early in the second half. After twenty minutes Breen scored for Taunton. The closing stages were somewhat haphazard, both sides missing easy openings, the final result being:
City Reserves 2 Taunton United 1.
CITY "STARS"
FANCIED BY OTHER CLUBS.
The Exeter City club have announced that enquiries have come in from other clubs in regard to certain of the players, but that due to the desirability of conserving the club's playing resources, nothing has been done regarding possible transfers. It was, however, intimated that a sum of £2,000 was needed at once to put the club on a satisfactory financial footing, and extra money was needed for the erection of stand accommodation. It is understand that several First Division clubs have recently made tentative enquiries concerning Matthews and Charlton, as well as others of the City's Football League side.
