Match 36
28th February 1925
Swindon Town (a)
Southern League
Swindon Reserves (h)
Attendance: 7,000
Swindon Town, who have a magnificent home record, were hopeful of improving their chances of promotion at Exeter's expense today. The City, with Davis for Blackmore at centre-forward, were also full of optimism, and a hard game seemed likely.
Saturday, February 28th.
SWINDON TOWN 1 EXETER CITY 0.
Last season: Swindon O City 1.
Exeter were disorganised at Swindon through Pullan being badly. injured and having to receive medical attention during the interval. For the remainder of the game they played with only ten men, Kirk dropping back to right half.
Swindon: Randall; Dickinson, Weston; Cooper, Bew, Rogers; Danyer, Purcell, Richardson, Johnson, Davies.
Exeter:- Bailey; Pollard, Charlton; Pullan, Crompton, Potter; Matthews, Kirk, Davis, Lievesley, Shelton.
Ten minutes from the interval Bailey saved from Richardson, and in the scramble which followed Johnson miskicked. But the ball went to Richardson, who scored from close range. To criticise Exeter would be unfair, for having to move Kirk from the forward line to Pullan's place throughout the second half denied
the City any reasonable chance of getting on terms. Without Kirk the City attack was comparatively lifeless. The inside forwards kept the ball too close, and did not make enough use of Shelton.
City Reserves v Swindon Reserves
Southern League
However, some consolation was gained from the Southern League game at St James's Park between the reserve teams of Exeter and Swindon,
the junior Grecians winning in grand style by six goals to one.
At half-time the City were four goals to the good, the first, by Murray resulting from a free kick inside the penalty area, the second, by Smelt, was a first-time header, the third, a crashing shot into the top of the net by Compton, and the fourth a Blackmore "special." Following Exeter's fifth goal, by Smelt, a penalty was awarded to Swindon from which Parker scored, then another of Blackmore's hefty drives rounded off the scoring.
City Reserves:- Pavey; Coleburne, Flynn; Appleyard, Lowton, Jones; Newman, Smelt, Blackmore, Murray, and Compton.
Swindon Reserves:- Nash; Price, O'Neill; Furniss, Waite, Archer; Ing, Crossley, Daniel, Skuse, and Parker.
Referee:- Mr F.W.Reeve, of Devonport.
EXETER CITY TO PLAY IN HOLLAND
Exeter City F. C. announce that they have been honoured by an invitation to play a match in Amsterdam against the famous Ajax club there, pretty well an International side, and the probable date is March 15th. The Grecians will be at Norwich on March 14th. "This," the City Club states, "will be the first match out of the country since the South American tour, when the team was held up at Lisbon on the outbreak of war."
INTERNATIONAL CAP FOR DICK PYM
Having apparently satisfied the selectors in the trial game, Dick Pym has been chosen to keep goal for England against Wales, at the Swansea Town F.C. ground on Saturday, February 28th.
