NORWICH CITY v EXETER CITY
Two Penalties Saved by Norwich Goalkeeper
Saturday, March 14th,
at Rosary Road, Norwich.
NORWICH CITY O EXETER CITY 1.
Last season: Norwich 4 City 0.
Norwich City:
Dennington Coulthard Bradbrook
Hannah Martin Earl McKinney McCudden Ryder Banks Stoakes
Referee: Mr W.E.Russell, of Swindon.
Compton Lievesley Davis Kirk Matthews
Shelton Potter Pullan Charlton Pollard Bailey
Exeter City:
Potter kept his forwards well on the move with a series of well judged passes. He also saved the Exeter goal with a clever tackle on Ryder, when the Norwich leader looked all over a scorer.
Later on the Grecians attacked with vigour and skill, and gave the Norwich defence a gruelling, Compton twice bringing Dennington to his knees with stinging drives. Excitement ran high towards the interval, a great shot by Ryder skimming the crossbar. The last minute was exceptionally thrilling, and during a strong attack Exeter were awarded a penalty for hands. Matthews took the kick, only for Dennington to bring off a brilliant save. At half-time there was no score.
Second Half.
Exeter assumed the aggressive, and playing right up on the backs the City forwards frequently forced them to kick back to Dennington to clear. Kirk was the leading light in the Exeter team, and after twelve minutes he put through a lovely pass to Compton, who cut in and scored in the corner of the net. Exeter continued to be good value for their lead, but they could not score again eve though another penalty was awarded them. This time Shelton took the spot kick but again Dennington saved. As far as goal scoring went the Grecians' luck was dead out, and even Kirk, with all his lightning raids and hard shooting, was quite unable to penetrate the barrier set up by Dennington. Exeter were by far the cleverer team, comparing favourably with the Canaries at full back and in the play of the forwards, especially Kirk. It was the brilliance of Dennington in saving the penalties which prevented Exeter from gaining a big victory.
CITY RESERVES v EBBW VALE.
Ebbw Vale, today's Southern League visitors at St. James's Park in opposition to the City Reserves, are the third team in four weeks to come out of South Wales and play on the City ground in black and amber striped jerseys. The weather was ideal for football, and the ground in good condition. The attendance was 2,500.
City Reserves: - Pavey; Coleburne, Flynn; Crawshaw, Lowton, Jones; Newman, Smelt, Appleyard, Murray, and Lendon.
Ebbw Vale:- Dixon; Traynor, Thomas; Jones, Bridburn, Bishop;Jones, Dowling, Finney, Jones, and McCandless.
Referee:- Mr W.H.Plucknett.
Chances were missed in the first half by Lendon, who scooped the ball over the bar from about two yards' range, and Smelt, who headed over from an easy scoring position. Fifteen minutes after the interval slack play in the City defence resulted in Dowling passing to McCandless, who eluded Coleburne and netted with a shot which gave Pavey no chance of saving. It was the City Reserves' worst display of the season, and the Vale could not be begrudged their win, by one goal to nothing.
EXETER CITY IN HOLLAND
Five Goals Scored Against Zwaluwen/The Swallows.
Zwaluwen (The Swallows) 1-5 Exeter City
Played on Sunday, March 15th.
The team known as Zwaluwen (The Swallows) were a mix of players which included some first team Ajax players. The select XI wasn't full strength due to some members of the Ajax team being engaged in an International match with Belgium. The City, who substituted Blackmore for Davis at centre-forward, won by five goals to one, and altogether the fifteen thousand people who saw the game were well pleased.
Exeter's scorers were Kirk (3), Charlton (penalty) and Lievesley.
