Easter Monday Football

TWO MATCHES AT ST. JAMES'S PARK

Boys' football at St James's Park has been extraordinarily lucky in the matter of the weather during the last few years, but the game between Exeter and Torquay Schoolboys on Bank Holiday morning was not favoured, and struck the only wet patch in the Easter Holidays. There was, however, a "gate" of 1,500, and the football was very good.

Exeter: Wright; Salter, Darch; Atherton, Knight, Setter; Phelps, Voaden, Hoare, Bastin, and Tucker.
Torquay:- Holland; Cann, James; Nicholls, Endacott, Evans; - Stonebridge, Knott, Alford, Beaman, and Holman.

Exeter Schools won by two goals (Bastin and Tucker) to one.

EXETER CITY v BRISTOL ROVERS.
Local appreciation of the City's good performances at Eastville and Gillingham was reflected in the attendance at St James's Park in the afternoon for the return match with Bristol Rovers, a crowd of well over 10,000 being present.
City: Bailey; Pollard, Flynn; Pullan, Crompton, Potter; Matthews, Kirk, Lievesley, Shelton, and Compton. Rovers: Whatley; Sambridge, Haydon; Dawe, Wragge, Scorer; Charlesworth, Morgan, Phillips, Whatmore, and Lofthouse.

Bristol Rovers took the lead in the sixth minute, Charlesworth being in the right position to head the ball into the net from a centre by Lofthouse, with Bailey yards out of his goal. Exeter City equalised in somewhat lucky fashion after half an hour's play. Crompton took the ball past one or two of the Rovers, in very enterprising style, and got almost to the goal-line before lifting it across to Lievesley, whose header was missed by Whatley through Sambridge getting in his way. The ball bounced off the head of the unfortunate Sambridge into the net. Nothing further was scored, the result being:
Exeter City 1 Bristol Rovers 1.

Southern League
Bristol Rovers v City Reserves

Exeter City Reserves beat the Rovers Reserves by a goal to nil, at Stapleton Road, Eastville, Blackmore being the scorer.

CITY RESERVES V WEYMOUTH

REGRETTABLE INCIDENT IN SOUTHERN LEAGUE MATCH
Captains Ordered Off

Tuesday, April 14th, at St James's Park.

Exeter City Reserves, with Blackmore at centre-forward, and Bob Pollard at right back, were too good for Weymouth, and at the end of an hour's clever football, played on a swampy ground in steady rain, the Grecians led by four goals. Murray scored three times and the other was obtained by Newman, who was in brilliant form.
Weymouth did not relish the position, and much amusement to the crowd was caused by their centre-forward, Hillier, who "paired off" with Appleyard and followed him everywhere, gesticulating, pointing, and arguing over some grievance, either real or fanciful.
Walker and Jones Sent off.
Ill-feeling crept into some of the play and Mr Kirby, who is a very tolerant referee, had an unenviable task.
Eventually at five o'clock and ten minutes before the game was due to finish, Walker, the player-manager and captain of Weymouth, dribbled the ball along the half-way line towards the right - wing position, seeking an opportunity to make a telling pass. He staved off the challenges of two or three Exeter players, then upon being tackled by Jones, hacked at the legs of the City captain, who could not avoid the boot. In a flash Jones retaliated with his fists, and Walker fell to the ground. The referee immediately ordered both players from the field. The incident was very regrettable, as the two men had played exemplary and good-natured football until then.
Exeter City Reserves 4 Weymouth 0.
