Showers were the order of the day at Exeter for the last of the season's Football League matches at St James's Park, in which the newest club, Bournemouth United (formerly Boscombe) provided the opposition. As both teams play in the same colours, Exeter kept to the red and white, and Bournemouth wore white shirts and navy blue knickers. On a splendidly conditioned ground the teams lined up as follows, before five thousand spectators.
Exeter City: -
Bailey Pollard Flynn Pullan Crompton Potter Matthews Kirk Blackmore Shelton Compton
Referee:- Capt. A. J. Prince - Cox, of London.
Bournemouth:
Wilson
Saxton Marshall
Leitch Smith Butt
McCulloch (R) Buchanan Eyre Roberts Clifford
Saturday, April 18th.
EXETER CITY 2 BOURNEMOUTH UNITED 1.
Last season: City 0 Bournemouth 2.
The early feature was the number of times the backs of each side passed back to their respective goalkeepers for effective clearance of the ball. Exeter were the first to become really lively, but a smart move by Bournemouth soon endangered the City goal, a shot by Roberts being turned over the bar by Potter. The corner was wasted by McCulloch, and play went to the other end where Wilson cleared from Blackmore. After twenty-one minutes Kirk, receiving from Matthews, scored with a fine shot from the corner of the penalty area. The ball went into the goal close to the post, and Wilson dived for it too late. Within five minutes of the change of ends Exeter got their second goal, the just reward of clever forward play. Shelton volleyed the ball into the rigging just below the crossbar, with Wilson groping thin air. Six minutes later Roberts scored for Bournemouth with a very neat shot.
