Showery weather prevailed for today's Football League match with the "Martyrs" at St James's Park, and the ground was saturated. There were seven thousand spectators when the captains tossed for choice of ends. Charlton called correctly, and Exeter defended the St James's Road end. Brooks had to take a flying kick when Findlay passed back to him with Blackmore following up. Clarke conceded a corner to Matthews, whose flag kick was sent in close to the goal. Lievesley headed the ball in, and Brooks let it slip into the net between his hands and legs. The game was then but four minutes old. After thirty minutes Lievesley netted again with a cool shot from a centre by Matthews, but the lead was reduced by Rumney five minutes later from Cruickshank's pass into the penalty area. At half time the score was:-
Exeter City 2 Merthyr Town 1.
SECOND HALF.
The Grecians were "all over their opponents, Blackmore in three minutes and Lievesley in five making the score 4-1 in the City's favour, but a surprising penalty decision was given to Merthyr when Pollard had the ball kicked against him, and Rumney scored from the spot. Shelton after 15 minutes scored with a flying header, and Charlton from the penalty spot netted the sixth goal. A second penalty was awarded but this time Rumney put the ball wide.
