Bristol City (a)

Southern League
Bristol City Reserves (h)

Bristol City 1-0 Exeter City

Saturday, February 27th 1926.
Attendance 15,000.

Bristol:-
Coggins; Hughes, Glenn; Neesam, Davies, Torrance; Gilhespy, Paul, Walsh, Pocock, Thompson.

Exeter:-
Bailey; Pollard, Charlton; Pullan, Potter, Shelton; Matthews, McDevitt, Blackmore, Lievesley, Compton.

Referee: Mr W.E.Russell, of Swindon.

Dull and mild weather prevailed, and the ground was in beautiful condition. Exeter City, for whom Charlton won the toss, played in white jerseys and dark blue knickers. The team, with three former "Babes" in its ranks, namely Pullan, Matthews, and Compton, were accorded a great ovation by the large crowd, which included about one thousand excursionists from Devon.

The only goal of the game was scored by Walsh five minutes before the half-time interval. Paul headed the ball forward to Gilhespy, who centred, and as Bailey reached out for the ball it was kicked practically out of his hands and into the rigging. Paul netted just before the interval but Walsh was given offside on that occasion. Although they scored a lucky goal Bristol City well deserved their victory, for the greater part of the game was Charlton and company versus Bristol, and Exeter had every reason to thank their skipper for his magnificent defensive display. The low score was a triumph for the Exeter rearguard, and Bailey played brilliantly in the closing stages.

Teams
Exeter Reserves: - Pavey; Lowton, Flynn; Crawshaw, Crompton, Myers; Newman, Kirk, Casson, Bolam, Cowley.
Bristol Reserves: - Vallis; Penn, Kilford; McLean, Pool, Smailes; Sherlaw, Dent, Mays, Sutherland, Ingram.

Play opened in sensational fashion in this Southern League match, played at St James's Park before 2,000 spectators, for each side scored in the first five minutes. Dent, a header from a centre by Ingram, and Newman, with a typical shot from Bolam's lob forward, were the successful marksmen.
