SOUTHEND UNITED 1 EXETER CITY 2.
Saturday, September 4th 1926,
at Southend.
Exeter City journeyed to Southend to oppose the "Shrimpers" this afternoon, and Mr Mavin reported a clean bill of health on arrival at the Kursaal. A mist hung over the town during the morning, but this gave way to brilliant sunshine before mid-day. Exeter made two changes from the team which lost to Swindon, Ditchburn and Bailey being displaced by Pullan and Randall. The teams were :
Southend United.
Moore; French, Sayles; Jewhurst, Murphy, Andrews; Robson, Morris, Hick, Smith, Donovan.
Exeter City.
Randall; Pollard, Charlton; Pullan, Pool, Garratt; Purcell, McDevitt, Blackmore, Walker, Compton.
Referee: Mr T.W. Chamberlain, of London.
Before their own supporters, Southend were beaten by a side that was vastly superior in every department. The home defence was quite unable to cope with the strong attacks that Blackmore and company repeatedly launched, and but for the wholehearted display of Moore the City's margin would have been greater. The success of the Grecians, although very welcome, was not a great surprise to those who had watched them at Exeter and then at Swindon during the opening two matches. What Southend lacked was a capable centre-half, Murphy being very weak in that position and quite incapable of holding Blackmore. Jewhurst took over at centre half for a time until Compton became even more dangerous, then the players reverted to their original positions. Meanwhile Walker, accepting a pass from Compton, after the left winger had easily outwitted Murphy, scored the winning goal. Previously Blackmore, after twenty-three minutes, had netted for Exeter, and Robson five minutes later for Southend.

BRISTOL ROVERS RESERVES 0.
Wednesday, September 8th 1926.
For all five forwards in a team to score a goal in one match is as rare as a "hat-trick" in cricket. Exeter City Reserves performed this feat in their Southern League game with Bristol Rovers Reserves on Wednesday evening, getting all the scoring over within the first hour. The City Reserves moved Phoenix up to inside right and brought Pullan in at right half. Dent captained the side. The Rovers' selected team included their two new backs, McGloughlin (Bradford Park Avenue) and Ashford (Doncaster Rov ers), and G.H.Douglas, their recent capture from Oldham Athletic, on the right wing. At the last minute Forbes, late of Bolton Wanderers, replaced Dick at right half, while Barratt (Lincoln City) and Milsom (Exeter City) took over the outside and inside right positions respectively from Douglas and Williams.
City Reserves. Bailey; Lowton and Miller; Pullan, Ditchburn, and Potter; Newman, Thompson, Dent, and Parkin. Phoenix,
Rovers Reserves. Densley; McGloughlin, Ashford; Forbes, Roberts, Jordan; Barratt, Milsom, Culley, Whatmore, and Harding.
The match kicked off at 6.15 p.m. Rather more than 3,500 people watched the play, and enthusiasm ran high as the Grecians, showing marked superiority in all departments, added the Rovers to their list of victims and piled on the goals.
Here follows a time-table of the goals:
6 minutes: Thompson, the ball being diverted off Forbes into the goal. 28 minutes: Newman, following up his own corner kick, which had been punched out by Densley.
37 minutes: Parkin, fed by Dent, dribbled right through from near the half-way line, beat McGloughlin, and rounded Densley to fire the ball into the empty net. Terrific applause greeted this magnificent goal.
Half-time City
Reserves 3 Rovers Reserves nil.
Second Half:
5 minutes: Phoenix, a good shot from a pass by Parkin. 15 minutes: Dent, a spectacular goal. Ditchburn fed Parkin, whose centre was converted by Dent with a lovely cross-shot.
The nearest Bristol came to scoring was in the seventh minute of the first half, when Culley fired over the bar from point-blank range
