EXETER CITY v LUTON TOWN
Played at St James's Park, Exeter, on Saturday, September 11th 1926.
Exeter City's smart performance at Southend last week helped to swell the "gate" at St James's Park this afternoon for the Grecians' second home match, in which the unbeaten Luton Town side were their opponents. Brilliantly fine, warm weather favoured the proceedings, and the spectators, rather than the players, and the ground was very fast. Randall was making his first appearance at Exeter in a competition match.
Exeter City.
Randall; Pollard, and Charlton; Pullan, Pool, and Garratt; Purcell, McDevitt, Blackmore, Walker, and Compton.
Luton Town.
Mingay; Graham, and Till; Richards, Rennie, and Millar; Pointon, Thomson,
Thompson, Agnew, and Clark.
Referee: Mr E.C.Sambrook, of Swansea.
Charlton won the toss and Luton had to face the sun in the opening half. A crowd of over 8,000 was present at the kick-off. Luton opened their scoring account 35 minutes after the start. Thompson was going through when Charlton handled the ball in the penalty area, and from the resultant spot kick Graham netted. Two minutes later Compton when going through was swept off his feet by Graham. Charlton took the kick, and scored, Mingay's quaint "step-dance" on the goal line making no impression on the City captain. The second half produced one goal, and that was scored by Thompson for the visitors, five minutes before the end. Pointon, after beating Charlton, put in a shot which hit the bar. Randall failed to hold the ball on its descent, and Thompson easily netted. Luton, on the run of the play, must consider themselves fortunate in getting both the points. On one occasion Blackmore struck the post with Mingay beaten, while two or three other shots sailed narrowly past the Luton posts. Pollard and Charlton were Exeter's best players.

YEOVIL & PETTERS 5
CITY RESERVES 1.
The first incidents of note were at the Exeter end of the field. A shot by Pidgeon went over the bar, then Gallon tested Bailey with a hard drive. Dent forced a corner off Abbott, but the kick was a poor one, and the home defence had no trouble in clearing their lines. After ten minutes Exeter were awarded a penalty, but Rogers saved Lowton's shot in excellent style. Yeovil got away, and Scott headed Hayward's centre wide with Bailey beaten. Yeovil began to have the better of the game, and the City backs had to kick to touch to save their goal. Bailey fielded a free kick by Lowes from just outside the penalty area, and Rogers from Dent from close range. After 25 minutes Hayward scored for Yeovil, the opening having been cut out by Pidgeon.
Half-time Yeovil 1 City Reserves 0.
In the second half Hayward increased Yeovil's lead after 10 minutes, and got another goal ten minutes later. Parker scored Yeovil's fourth, Newman got one for Exeter, and Pidgeon immediately scored the fifth for Yeovil.
Yeovil and Petters.
Rogers; Day and Radford; Abbott, Gallon, and Gregory; Pidgeon, Hayward, Scott, Lowes, and Parker.
Exeter City Reserves.
Bailey; Lowton, and Miller; Arscott, Ditchburn, and Potter; Newman, Phoenix, Thompson, Dent, and Parkin.
- JACK DAVIS TRANSFERRED.
In the news at the week-end was Jack Davis, a "Grecian" for two and a half seasons. He was transferred from Newport County to Plymouth Argyle on Friday.
BRISTOL ROVERS RES. 2
EXETER CITY RES. 1
Monday evening,
September 13th 1926,
at Eastville.
Exeter City Reserves visited Bristol Rovers Reserves on Monday evening, in the return Southern League match, and although scoring an early goal by Percy Newberry, were beaten by two to one.
Randall having strained a leg muscle in Saturday's match with Luton, it was decided to hold Bailey in readiness for the Football League game with Bristol Rovers at St James's Park tomorrow, and Letheren, the Topsham amateur, stepped into the breach. The Grecians started brilliantly, and Newberry netted a clever goal inside four minutes. Exeter continued the quicker and cleverer team, but the forwards could not beat Whatley a second time, and the Rovers equalised through Barratt after 35 minutes. Play continued on very similar lines, Exeter being frequently prominent and playing cleverly, but Whatley kept the ball out every time. Midway through the second half Miller kicked over a centre from Barratt and Whatmore obtained the winning goal. A pleasing feature of the game was the form of the amateur, Newberry, who was the best forward on the field.
Exeter Reserves:- Letheren; Lowton and Miller; Ditchburn, Good, and Potter; Newman, Phoenix, Thompson, Newberry, and Parkin.
