Match 07
25th September 1926
Brighton & Hove Albion (h)
Southern League
Weymouth (a)
EXETER CITY 0 BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION 0.
Saturday, September 25th 1926,
at St James's Park.
The weather was showery, but not wet enough to affect the ground. The match, which was disappointing, ended in a goal-less draw. Brighton enjoyed much the better of the play throughout, but the forward line, having scored nine goals against Swindon Town last Saturday, failed to take advantage of the City defence, which was not always reliable under pressure. The Exeter goal had a remarkable escape in the closing minutes, hesitation by the home backs giving Jennings plenty of time to pass to Cook. The Brighton man would have scored if Bailey had not dashed out and smothered the ball just in the nick of time.
Exeter City.
Bailey; Pollard and Charlton; Pullan, Ditchburn, and Potter; Purcell, Phoenix, Blackmore, Dent, and Compton.
Brighton and Hove.
Williams; Smith and Curran; Wilkinson, Mooney, and Little; Nightingale, Jennings, Cook, Neil, and Wilson.
Referee: Mr E.G.Goddard, of Swindon.
Brighton were a smart footballing side, but their attacking work fell through against a very resourceful pair of backs and a goalkeeper who made no mistake and did several particularly good things. The combination shown by the visitors and their methodical forward work towards the end of the first half, when the team was at its best, threatened to break down the City defence, especially as Pullan and Potter were none to certain at this Pollard, too, made a few mistakes, but his exceptional speed off the mark generally enabled him to recover. Exeter were handicapped by Phoenix sustaining a leg injury just before half-time. The City attack was not impressive when the forwards were at close quarters with the Brighton backs, and a goal-less draw was just about right on the run of the game.
